Flowers & art: ‘Art in Bloom’ brings paintings to life with flowers

Flowers & art: ‘Art in Bloom’ brings paintings to life with flowers Putnam & Putnam was founded in 2014 by Darroch Putnam, a photographer by trade, and Michael Putnam, a formally trained interior designer.  The Putnam's have worked with high-profile clients including Bergdorf Goodman, Vogue, Harper's, Bazaar, and even they even did the floral arrangements for actress Gwyneth Paltrow's wedding.  Most recently they've authored "The Flower Color Guide," the first reference book to organize flower types by color.  The Putnam's will be speaking about their design philosophy while presenting a hands-on floral demonstration.

Plan your horticulture accordingly to the weather. If you live in an area where the ground freezes during the winter, do not plant anything before frost is expected. If you live in a warmer area, take a break during the warmest months of summer to avoid wasting too much water.

To save space in your garden, try planting your crops in blocks rather than in the traditional rows. Rows end up leaving too much space between plants for needless pathways. Blocks help keep plants tight together without sacrificing production. Small variety kitchen vegetables do best in blocks that are arranged in a wide bed.

When choosing plants for your garden, pick plants that are native to your geographic region. Plants native to your region will naturally do well in your garden because they are already adjusted to your climate. When you plant native plants, you will not be surprised by any unexpected results when your plants mature.

If you are introducing children to gardening, start them off with an herb garden. Herbs are easy to grow and you can start them in containers, which are easier for children to handle. When children see that the herbs they grow can be used in your cooking, they will be very proud of their accomplishment.

Start a compost bin, and enjoy nutrient-rich fertilizer that you can use for your vegetable plants, herbs, flowers and more. Food scraps and peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, newspaper, paperboard, yard waste and other organic matter are perfect additions to your compost bin. Keep a small bucket or bag in your freezer as an odor-free way to collect kitchen waste, and empty the container into the outdoor bin when it is full.

Avoid sun damage by dressing appropriately whenever you will be gardening in the sun. Pair sunglasses with wide-brimmed hats and a dab of sunblock. If you cover up from the sun, you are less likely to become burned or get skin cancer.

Fertilizing is an important step in preparing your garden soil. Manure can help your plants grow quickly, but you must use only commercially created products to reduce the chance of contracting pathogens. It is important that you use some sort of fertilizer, although it doesn't really matter which variety you choose.

Brighten up your winter garden with trees that have interesting bark. A winter garden can tend to look bare and drab, especially if you live in a very cold climate. Three good choices are a paperbark maple, silver birch or scarlet willow. This will make a quite noticeable difference to the look of your garden.

Prepare your garden bed in the fall for spring planting with this simple method. Lay down several layers of newspaper where you plan to grow your garden, wetting it down as you go. Cover the newspaper with thick black plastic, making sure the edges are secured so it doesn't fly away. In the spring, remove the plastic and plant seeds right through the newspaper and into the soil.

You don't need to buy expensive weed barrier fabrics for your garden. Instead use a layer of newspaper or old cardboard under your beds. It will discourage weeds and is a cost effective and biodegradable protective layer. This can also be used on pathways or anywhere you want to limit weed growth.

Cover your muddy shoes with plastic bags. This allows you to maintain your flow so you can rapidly get back to your horticulture.

You must water your plants correctly, to achieve success with your garden. When watering your garden, always try to do it early in the morning or in the evening, when the sun has gone down. This gives the soil a chance to actually soak up the water without it evaporating. Also, if you have pots, try to hand water them with a can, rather than using a hose. This way you can make sure that each pot gets enough water, since potted plants can dry out completely in a matter of hours, if they haven't had a deep watering.

When planting your tomatoes in your organic garden, you should always be sure you water them very deeply, but you shouldn't water them frequently because this can damage them. You should aim to water them around once a week except for during the summer when you should water them every five days.

To make the most of your time in the garden, you should store all of your tools and implements in a close, accessible location. You should use a large pail and wear sturdy pants that have several pockets. Have gloves, shears, a trowel and anything else you need handy for quick use.

Composting is a great way to fuel your garden. You can add pretty much anything, like grass clippings, shredded paper, coffee grounds, and much more. Basically, you can use anything that was living at one time (but try to avoid animal products). If you buy some worms and keep the compost bin in a warm, sunny place it will turn into perfectly dark and rich soil in no time.

tangerine crossvine before bringing them home. When you are trying to get the best plants for your organic landscape, you should take the time to get educated. Chose plants that are suited to growing conditions you already have, rather than trying to build an environment for a plant you didn't properly plan for.

Short, low-lying weeds can be a headache in any organic garden. The best tactic for dealing with such intruders is to use a spade to cut them out at root level and bury them entirely under fresh soil. Dense, crawling weeds are too hard to pick out individually, but fortunately they are easily handled in bulk.

Use a soaker hose to water your garden. A soaker hose allows the water to be absorbed directly in to the soil, rather than disbursed in to the air. This helps to conserve water, a valuable resource. Plant leaves also stay dry, which means you get to avoid pesky fungus problems.

As you can see, there are many helpful tips and techniques that you can use to grow beautiful, hearty plants in your garden. If grasses follow our pointers, your plants will be well on their way to becoming the beautiful plants you have always dreamed of growing in your garden.
