Griefs and sorrows

 What do the words "griefs" and "sorrows" mean in the Hebrew in the following verse?

Isaiah 53:4

"Surely he [Jesus] hath born our GRIEFS, and carried our SORROWS; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted."  

If we look them up in a Lexicon, here is what we find for the word "griefs"

חֳלִי chŏlîy, khol-ee'; from H2470; malady, anxiety, calamity:—disease, grief, (is) sick(-ness).

Here is how Isaiah 53:4 is translated in the Amplified Classic version:

^{4 "}Surely He has borne our griefs (sicknesses, weaknesses, and distresses) and carried our sorrows and pains [of punishment], yet we [ignorantly] considered Him stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God [as if with leprosy]."

Matthew referred back to this verse when he quoted from the book of Isaiah in Matthew 8:17 (KJV):
