The proposal by the American Psychiatric Association to create a new illness – prolonged grief disorder – and to redefine children's mental health is the stuff of dreams for Big Pharma

"The revised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), scheduled for publication in May 2013 by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), proposes that grief reactions of more than two weeks may be diagnosed as depression. And where DSM leads, the rest follow. The World Health Organisation's international classification of diseases group is debating the creation of a new illness – prolonged grief disorder."
Then on to children:
" The boundaries defining attention deficit hyperactive disorder are to be redrawn, and a new disorder – disruptive mood dysregulation disorder" [GOOD GRIEF!!!]
"When the boundaries of illness classification are redrawn they are inevitably broadened. So more children will be labelled as mentally ill"

My suggestion---- don't ever let your doctor diagnose you with depression or anxiety. You'll have that on your medical record for life----- and then it may follow that any pains you might have will be labeled as those! Ignoring the fact that you might REALLY have a pain that needs to be treated.

Talking about depression--- there are two simple questions asked when considering a dx of depression. If either one is answered then a longer (9 point) questionnaire comes up.
The simple test, which I call the YOU TWIT test:
Over the past two months, have you been bothered by:
1. Little interest or pleasure in doing things?
(YOU TWIT! OF COURSE I\'M BOTHERED!!!! I HAVE LOTS OF INTEREST IN LOTS OF THINGS BUT I DON\'T HAVE THE ENERGY TO DO THEM. OR I\'M TOO SICK. I HAVE TO USE MY \'SPOONS\' TO DO EVERYDAY CHORES, LIKE WORK, TAKE CARE OF SMALL CHILDREN, CLEAN HOUSE, DO LAUNDRY---- BUT, HEY! I\'D STILL TAKE PLEASURE DOING OTHER THINGS IF I WEREN\'T FLAT ON MY FACE AFTER DOING ALL THESE OTHER \'PLEASURES\'!)
2. Feeling down, depressed and hopeless?
[YOU TWIT! SEE ABOVE!]
If the patient answers yes to either one of the above questions, consider using a quantitative questionnaire to further assess whether the patient has sufficient symptoms to warrant a diagnosis of clinical major depression and a full clinical interview.
