Grief and choices

One of the most amazing things I've learned is how truly strong people can be. My father was badly injured in an industrial accident a few years ago. He ended up being burnt over 40% of his body with second degree burns. He suffered a third degree burn to the small of his back. It later needed skin grafting to properly heal. Living through all that is strong enough for anyone. But in my Dad's case he was literally covered by live constant blowing steam. The scene is horrifying. He was in a small piece of equipment known as a Bobcat. It was in a narrow corridor. His only options were to get out through the front. Which meant consciously stepping into very hot ashes. Another option was to remain in the steam and let coworkers recover a body after the steam was gone. What he chose to do was to slowly back out of that corridor. This choice was made as steam was still blowing on him. He chose to go through literal hell so as not to break the hearts of the ones that he loved. This included the one woman he loved for so much of his life. Later he faced the hell of watching her die from cancer. He is still heartbroken. And yet he still chooses to live on. He is a remarkable man. It's an honor being his adopted son.
