As the eighth Headmaster of BGS, I acknowledge the legacy forged by those outstanding educators who came before me and the many achievements of our boys and staff over the years. The second ladder below shows the position of Brighton Grammar School when all schools are ranked by their 2021 VCE 40+ percentage measures, . If two schools have equal 40+ percentages, their 40+ score counts are used as a tie-breaker.
They are followed by high-fee co-educational schools Carey Grammar (the last big co-ed private school in the inner east), Haileybury’s Brighton campus and Caulfield Grammar. The only girls’ school to round out the list is believed to be Loreto Mandeville Hall, in Toorak. Our Christmas Pageant is also well underway with rehearsals first thing in the morning. We ask that boys arrive by 9.00am as we leave the Centre at 9.15m for practice. We are currently trialling boys in a variety of roles over the coming weeks and will finalise roles once the boys feel confident and happy with their choice. Please alert me if you are not planning to be here for the end of the year.
The hats definitely amazed onlookers as the boys carefully tried to balance the weight of their designs, whilst following their friends around the hall to our Easter music. Congratulations to the following boys from Prep to Year 6 who will be presented with Term 1 Effort Cards at this week’s assembly. St Marks Community Centre would like to thank the Brighton Grammar Community for the overwhelming generosity towards their homeless support program. Best wishes to all families for the holiday break and may the blessings of Easter be with you. A special mention to our St Andrew’s Choristers who have a significant commitment throughout the Holy Week celebrations.
Thank you to Hayley Blakiston for her organisation and to all Music staff for their continued great work with our budding musicians. On Tuesday evening, our Beginner/Training Strings, Concert Band and Choir ensembles performed at St Andrew’s Church. The standard of performances was outstanding considering this was for many boys their first concert. Many boys commented on how good the refurbished spaces looked and how they loved their time in the Junior School and were happy to come back and walk down memory lane.
The Schoolboy's team will be competing against the best young rugby talent in the country at the 49TH Australian Schools Rugby Championships, being held in Pattamatta between the 3rd and 6th of July. A huge thank you to all staff involved from Brighton Grammar in preparing the day. Come along and support the artists of BGS at the Secondary School Art Show on Thursday 2 November from 5.00pm at the Urwin Centre. All of the boys who competed in the Athletics program throughout the year should be extremely proud of themselves as they all played their part in this fantastic result. The APS Boys’ Combined Athletics Sports final took place on Saturday 14 October.
This inspirational group of young men serve as role models for current students to aim and extend their own academic reach. On the final day, the boys set off to the site of the APS final, Lakeside Stadium. The first week of the holidays saw the athletes head down for the annual Athletics camp at Queenscliff in preparation for the upcoming competitions. “This tour continues the successful legacy of Australian Schoolboys Rugby teams which have toured internationally since 1969, teams which produced over 200 Wallaby representatives. These tours represent the pinnacle of each boy’s rugby experience developed through Australia’s internationally recognised school rugby system. They offer the boys the highest level of international competition, team building, cultural experiences and the unforgettable life experience of representing their country in sport,” said Kevin Culliver, President of the ASRU.
The ISBC represents over 500 boys’ schools worldwide, with the shared goal of encouraging boys to feel connected and engaged in their learning and with their community. The conference confirmed for me that our school is leading the way in our focus on providing a targeted wellbeing curriculum specific to the needs of boys. There is no doubt Wilson House is a busy learning community for boys, staff and parents. Our boys are fortunate to be provided with such a variety of learning experiences. Boys and staff alike will all look forward to the two week holiday break.
In the days I spent camping, riding and hiking with students last week, I was impressed by the attitude and engagement of all students; I am sure they will look back with very fond memories of this journey. A smoking ceremony was performed by Steve Parker who was a traditional owner of the Boon wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. Steve spoke about the importance of a smoking ceremony and also taught the students local Indigenous words from the Boon wurrung language. He then invited all staff and students to walk around the fire and to let the smoke cleanse their spirit. The first event will be centred around the Foundation for Positive Masculinity. Our guest speaker, Dr Matt Englar-Carlson PhD, is a professor of counselling and the Director of the Centre for Boys and Men at California State University, Fullerton.
The number of students enrolled at the school expressed in terms of full-time students. Families with swimmers in both learn to swim program and squad program will be invoiced one term in advance through Simply Swim. To raise and educate boys, parents and teachers need to have a significant understanding and appreciation of what makes boys tick. You can be the best Mathematics, English, Science, PE or Art teacher, but if you don’t understand boys you will not be an effective teacher.
Ms Mitchell and Mr Nott said their desire to enrol Harrison in a good private school was driven by their own experiences. “Often schools will say, yes, we’ve got 1000 on the waiting list but they go back to that waiting list after the year has started and it’s disappeared, vapourised," he said. "People have gone elsewhere." But he said they were not required to reveal the size of their waiting lists or to cap their fees to the rate of administration. The boys' schools are St Kevin’s College in Toorak, Scotch College in Hawthorn, Xavier College in Kew, Trinity Grammar in Kew, Camberwell Grammar, Melbourne Grammar and Brighton Grammar. These schools charge a higher-than-average $154 to be put on their waiting list.
We understand this is a lot of money, but this is what it takes to compete at a global level. Even a small donation counts, and will help us meet our end goal of winning for BGS. I would like to extend my thanks to the staff and parents who assisted with and accompanied our boys on one of the trips over the school holidays .
