golf outing fundraisers
Yesterday ~ I volunteered and my husband golfed in the suicide prevention organization. It went well and we had fun. The money raised is to educated area school students on the "how to" to help a friend in need because when a teen is suffering they commonly share their suicidal thoughts to a friend. The friend is the one who acts. Pretty smart. I know my son, when he was in high school shared it with a friend. The friend didn't let us know, however. I found out about it by reading his instant messages. It was his older brother that alerted me and showed me how to get on it. How he knew - I don't know. What I did know - was something wasn't right but I didn't suspect that.
Saturday I will again (how ironic) be volunteering at the other outing for the group that raises funds for families of adolescents who need drug treatment. The funds we give are only for what the families insurance doesn't cover. So expensive. The teens in our area only receive up to 45 days of treatment.
In another city and state (actually my hometown) the teens and young adults receive as much as 10 months - for court ordered treatment! And (I really don't know how the others afford it) but I talked to the director of the facility and she said that kids who aren't court ordered typically stay that long as well. And she said they don't turn down any kid whose family cannot pay. Amazing.
