Goal Update for January 11, 2009

Still sober!  I watch movies, self-teach computer programming, and spend time with my wife with all the free time. I would be lying if I said I wasn't tempted to play from time-to-time, and I've come close to giving in.  In those moments, thinking about the disappointment in myself and the guilt I'd feel usually holds me back.  There's also the fact that I'm almos there.  Why would I sacrifice what is now 60+ days of sobriety for 30 minutes - 3 hours of indulgence?  Why not wait until 90 days are up when I can play guilt-free and not have to restart my 90 day fast from the beginning? I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do / allow with regard to gaming after the 90 days.  I think I'd like to begin thinking through that now in this entry...  Now that I'm managing my life instead of just letting my life manage, I think I might be able to afford a little time with games within specific limits.  There's certain things I have to always keep at the forefront of my mind when deciding whether to play.  That's what this temptation-resisting is training me for...  "think before you play."  Some of the things I must always consider include: * The game cannot and should not be expected to fulfill me in some way.* I cannot expect to play a game until it gives me a satisfied sensation.* I must enforce whatever schedule I've set for myself with regards to playing games (not having "enough" fun in the allotted time is no excuse for playing longer). * Always make certain that I've achieved a reasonable level of personal productivity for the day or week before allowing even the consideration of gameplay.* Personal goals must be set and met before the privelege of playing games can happen. * If after assessing whether I've completed all my responsibilities before playing and I'm not certain, I must NOT play games.  I should rather find something else to do: reading, movies, study, sleep, call a friend, chores, exercise, etc - just about anything other than video games.  Well, if you're a member and wish to support me in overcoming my video game addiction, I happily welcome your comments.  Thanks, justnick
