Glad we have a distraction today
Today we have our other fundraising golf outing. It's the one that raises funds for families of adolescents with chemical dependency issues who need help with the cost of what their insurance won't cover for drug treatment. Although it's cool and cloudy now - we're supposed to see some some and comfortable warm temperatures. It should be a good one. We have tons and tons of Chinese auction items (many collected by my husband's coworker who isn't even involved with this organization). I also managed to get a few local TV celebrities too. One of them is our friend who've lost touch with over the years and this was a good way to get together again. In fact, he was in our wedding - my husband's best man. He's bringing a camera crew - great exposure to our small organization!
Last night I received another call - this time from J. He texted "O will be at house tmrw" - seems a bit out of it to me. At least he was aware enough to let me know. I hate this. I mentioned to him the other day - that he would feel sooo much better if he would try the rehab and just to see what it's like to be sober and feel good. He said that he doesn't want to give up drinking right now - not at 22. He can't fathom not drinking for the rest of his life. This kind of thinking - I know - is typical but it's still hard. Yesterday he said he can't run anymore because his lungs hurt from smoking too much. Sigh...
Oh - one more thing. When I tossed and turned again last night (it must be subconscious thinking as to why I can't sleep - because I'm not a "mess") I was mad at myself for not taking advantage of a teaching moment. Yesterday when my hubby and I went for a walk we ended up stopping in front of a house of some old friends of ours. And at the very moment another person who was out for a walk happened by at the same time who was friends of both of us back then when our children were small. My husband was chatting with the husband of one of the woman during this time. Anyway, we got talking about people from the past (of course) and then the subject came up about my old neighbors. They moved and the parents split up and the kids had a hard time trying to manage. They stayed in our community and both parents remarried. Well, the youngest passed away a few years ago due to suicide. He was about 24. Why I didn't intercede and say more about their ignorant comments - I don't know. Maybe I didn't have the energy. The one woman (whose always been a gossiper) blamed the suicide on the parents. She said her daughter was good friends of this boy and that he was ignored and lost as a teen. I don't know if they knew that this young man was suffering from chronic pancreatitis and couldn't take it anymore. Obviously, he had a drinking problem and it was common knowledge to those he was close to. Having said that - I had a long conversation with his dad about a year before this boy died and he talked so highly of his boys. His boys were actually working for him and he mentioned his concern about the health of this one. I wish I would have said something to these ladies about alcoholism - that no matter what upbringing one experiences - it doesn't matter - it's a disease and no ones fault. I don't know if it would have made any difference anyway because the one woman seemed to be very set with her opinions. She was never one of my favorite people. Still ............ I should have said something.
