Gigging? Playing Out?? My Son
Last night, same as every Friday night for a while, I played guitar at my favorite Christian bookstore. I've met some wonderful people in this setting, and for the past several weeks other musician's have met me there for jam sessions. Somehow the word is getting out about this as more and more people seem to be showing up to listen to us. Last night was most special, as my son Kris came with his tenor sax, and he was feeling it. He also brought his friend Moe to play bass, and that was great as well, as Moe is a believer, and supported me during our talk later in the night about the church, and about faith. You see, I am trying to inspire my children to attend church with me. Kris actually said to me, 'dad, if I wanted to explore this, find out more about faith, what should I do?'. If you know anything at all about me, you will know that this is the best music I could hope to hear! I have been praying daily for Jesus to enter his heart, and let Kris see what I see. And last night, this was the first sign that this could be happening, Thank You Jesus! But back to the music. A couple of weeks ago I met this woman in the store, Nelly. I was practicing this song I was working on, and she sat down to listen. When I took a break, she told me about her daughter, how she plays guitar and sings in her church. She said she would bring her daughter, Jessica, to meet me and play together. So Jessica shows up with a beautiful guitar, a very unique method of playing it, and a strong clear bell-like voice, and a binder packed with worship songs. So we played for hours, and it sounded really good, as you would imagine with two accomplished guitar players and a really great singer. Last night Jessica came again, so there was the four of us, 2 acoustic guitars, bass, and tenor. I am pretty good on guitar, having played for >40 yrs. So we played several songs, including 3 or 4 that I've managed to comlete in the last couple of weeks, and a few of them sounded really quite good, polished even, though some of them we were just on our first run through. I took a break for a drink, and this girl comes up to me to tell me how much she enjoyed the music, and she asked if we would play at her church for this event they are having later this month. I asked Jessica and her mom, and they said no problem, so, well, we're doing it. I never imagined playing out like this, but hey, to worship, for me, any time, any place. At work just this last week, I played for several of our workers during break time. That was fun, and they really liked it. One woman asked if I would play at her church for a fund raiser on June 27. I was honored, and agreed. So last night I asked Jessica if she would like to do this with me, and she agreed! I don't really have a big head about this, but you can always say that you knew me when, ha ha. Peace.
