getting there.....

Got a call from the attendance lady....AGAIN!  Everyday this week.  T wanted to come home (always around 10).  I don't know why they call me.  He said he has nothing to do because the students are taking a quiz and he's so far behind that he can't take it.  I told the attendance lady that he has to stay in school.  He doesn't have another class until the end of the day (many study halls and lunch in between).  I asked her to find out what alternatives they have for him.  Legally, can he come home?  I feel for him.  He said he talked to his guidance counselor (I suggested that he do that) and the gc said that he would tutor T since he used to be a math teacher.  Unfortunately he can't be tutored during math but during study hall.  This is crazy.  She said she'd call me back.  Funny, but I called it.  I told his guidance counselor that T wasn't ready to tackle math this semester due to his situation.  He thought T should try it and so did T.  Whatever.  I suggested that T just drop this class because he's failing anyway.  He's so far behind in his math because of all his absences that he just might as well drop it.  Guess that's not the answer, however.  Heard back from his guidance counselor - and T wanted to talk to me -  he did trying -- to manipulate me.  He said he will leave school anyway.  I told him if he does, it's his decision.  He said he feel like he wants to use (always during math) and told him that that is his decision again.  He then asked if his sponsor could come and get him from school.  Oh.....sure.....like it changes things! Not!  Just as I was telling him that I wanted to talk to the asst. principal, the asst. principal took the phone away from T and told me that he was going to talk to T..  So now.......eventually I will find out.  Put a call into his drug counselor.....waiting to hear from her too.  Are we having fun, yet?    I can't get over how tolerant the assistant principal has been with my son.  I know he likes my son and always had a good relationship with him.  Knowing T's situation .....he's been more patient than I would have been, however.  Son was so disrespectful to him that he swore at him!  Sounds like the old T!  Assistant principal told me he was close to calling police!  Of course, he didn't want that and was doing whatever he could to help him.  There will come a time when enough is enough.  The other reason for the patience is T has made a lot of progress in school (his other classes he's doing fine) and for having a few difficult days after his relapse.....he understands.  In fact, he was very good with my son before T was clean.....very tolerant.  If he hadn't been....T would have dropped school a long time ago.  All I can say is......the assistant principal deserves an award.

I bet there is an entry form for an award......somewhere at the district level or a civilian award for people that go \"beyond\" the job description when working with youth......

I am surprised that he does not have study hall assignments for making up work or trying to do some remedial math.........I agree with you, there is no reason to come home. If there is an issue of drug temptations while in study hall, I am sure there is an in school suspension (SAC) site where he can work in a more supervised setting.

While my experience with AA is very limited, I did not think that a sponsor would drop everything to remove someone -- talk, yes but come get....especially when you are the guardian? Can you talk with the sponsor????

I am sorry that this has been such a trying day! Hope things improve!!!!!
