Getting started
So this week I had my first consult with Dr. Graber's in Syracuse. I was impressed by his staff and they seem to have their act together. During our introductory semenar, I was by far the smallest person there. It felt strange to feel small. I was alway the biggest in my circles. I never thought of getting gastric bypass until my emergency appendectomy this past August. My surgeon told my boyfriend I needed to get one. Apparently my size is catching up to me in my inners, and we want to fix it while I'm still young.
I started the pre-op diet yesterday. I'll admit, I'm not completely following it yet - more easing into it. I felt so hungry yesterday, made me tired and miserable. A big challenge I'm going to have is not drinking with meals. I'm used to drinking a lot of water with meals. I feel so dry and thirsty when I didn't drink. Another challenge I faced was trying to eat slowly and cut tiny bites of food while in the ambulance. Not an easy feat. But my greatest challenge is going to be my boyfriend. Though he tries to be supportive, I fear he will be my down fall. He is a candidate for the procedure himself, though he is in denial. He comes from "big" family, therefore he thinks its ok to be so. They all eat large quantities of food, literally inhaling it. And they must have something sweet for dessert after meals. Loves juice and sweet tea. He believes if he can still physically move around the way he'd like, he is healthy. (Though his BMI is about 42). Last night after telling him how hungry I felt. His response was to tell me to go eat something (though I've already ate my meals for the day) and asked me to make him a huge mug of hot chocolate. I told him I'd like him to change his eating habits to go along with mine, but he doesn't seem to receptive to it. He said he'll eat more healthy foods, but it still won't come close to my concept of healthy food.
I have a while to prep and transition. I probably won't be able to have the surgery until this summer (the whole school & work schedule conflict). I figured I get started networking some support from people like me - who want change. I'm digging around looking for food journals I like, trying to find support group sites, and now this journal. Here's to an assertive start!
