Getting ready to go

On Thursday Drew and I are flying from Boston to Dublin to Glasgow. On Friday we'll poke around Glasgow and spend the night there. On Saturday we'll take a train to Fort William and meet up with my sister and BIL. On Sunday, we'll start walking! Walking for 75 miles, over the following 6 days, up the Great Glen Way, to Inverness. It might be rainy... but it will be green and beautiful no matter what. Woo hoo! A bonny holiday.
The whole thing came about because last summer when we were still staggering after losing Andy, my sister Lizzie said, "We need things to look forward to." We got together with a bottle of wine and made a big list of places we'd all like to see, and Scotland was at the top of everyone's list. My BIL Tred is actually a member of a very active clan...
Anyway, we're psyched. I'm packed. I have REALLY good waterproof walking shoes, all kinds of books loaded onto my Kindle, and almost everything is ready. I realized that half of getting away is preparing myself for being THERE, and half of getting away is making sure that everything back HERE is ok. The dogs, the house, the housesitter, the lawns, the bills, etc. Oh not to mention my job... which is never easy to leave with all the clamoring clients. Bye-bye!
Last night I took a big sheet of beautiful hand-made paper, sort of brown and white (like Andy's batik from the dream!) and cut it into nine smaller squares, each about 8x8. I took a pinch of ashes from the box over which Hootie watches day and night, and folded it into each of the squares, into little individual small packets. These went into a ziploc bag, along with about a dozen of the thousand multi-colored origami paper cranes that were folded for Andy by a friend when he was diagnosed with cancer. I don't have an exact plan... more of a loose concept... and maybe one of you can help me feel my way towards some focus here... I'm thinking that on each of our days on this hike, I will find a special little place, and open the paper and sprinkle that little half-teaspoonful of Andy's ashes into the waters, grounds, and skies of Scotland. Maybe I should have some words? Maybe a song? Maybe a prayer?
I have one other idea for the ashes... when I get back. I want to start a pretty large crop of PEAR TREES. Andy loved pears, and his dad Larry has a great pear tree. I have been reading about how to grow pears from seeds... it's more complicated than I thought. But it's something Andy would have loved... he had such an agricultural soul. So if I can start a lot of little baby pear trees... with a pinch of ash in each pot, then someday there will be pears, and they will be taking Andy into the world for birds and worms and dragonflies and all of creation... maybe even for some of us to eat. Andy, when he was feeling quite irreverent, told us, and even his poor dear Dr. Evans, that he believed in 'reincarnivoration' -- that we would all have to eat him after he died. No thank you, we said! But I will figure out how to grow pear trees. Again, if anyone has experience, praytell, how is it done?!?
Grateful today for
1. little things that go right.
2. a long walk after dinner
3. running into a friend when I was near home, and feeling close to her
4. the smell of Miss Kim Lilacs
5. my loving home, and knowing I'll see my beloved Mum and Dad tomorrow for lunch.
And for this amazing world. Wish Andy could have been with me tonight. I held Hootie last night after folding up the paper packets and ached so hard it took my breath away. Why, where, how... things I'll never know.

That sounds great Sarah. Your idea as well as the way you have prepared each little packet of small amounts of Andy\'s ashes along with the little origami cranes, is perfect. It will really be an amazingly satisfying journey.

I will be thinking of you and along with everyone else here will be very much looking forward to hearing about your walk. I am sure you will have many very special moments.

Sarah, your trip will be wonderful and Andy will be on the journey with you as you release his ashes along the way. I would just follow your heart. You will know when a spot is special enough and deserving of Andy. Have a safe trip and we will get together when you return. I love your gratitude list. Much love to you and Andy, Linda

You will be missed and I cannot wait to hear all about it upon your return. To be able to fulfill one of your dreams is such a gift. I have no doubt that Andy will be companioning you on this vacation and because of that you will \"know\" where to scatter the ashes and the words from your heart will come as they always do. I have no doubt that you will be very much presence as once again you are cradled in Spirit\'s abundance and love. Seventy-five miles... wow! Safe travels dear Sarah and may continued healing be yours on this journey . With love, Joanie

Sarah: I think the trip will be very spiritual for you! You will know the plan as it unfolds - Andy will guide you. I hope your pear trees grow - a wonderful tribute to Andy.
I\'m looking forward to hearing all about your walk. I think that might have been a more realistic walk for us but we are booked for the Camino.
Have a safe trip.

N O O N time ... wherever you are, drop away!!!!!
Or if that is to unpredictable (perhaps fitting for whimsical Andy but not so much for Mum\'Rah in needing a plan) ... when the moment arrives that you feel in your heart and know is just perfect ... silent prayer to youself where your centered self stands calm - drop away ... or a sight of a landscape/person that would SOOO deeply touch Andy\'s heart as you know it would - drop away ... or a toast in a pub with a fifth of scotch and all the locals *SLAINTE* - drop away ... or your FAB4 with arms up overhead doing your best Scottish Jig on your path at high NOON - drop away .... Andy, Andy, Andy, Andy ... ohhh how he\'s smiling no matter what!

Looking forward to wonderful things is a great way of keeping going after the horrendous loss we\'ve all had--a new way of connecting to those around us and the world, if we let it happen. I know you will have a wonderful time, and will be taken \"out of yourself\" for awhile. Margery Ann

Ai - Scotland - me bonnie lass - jealous I am. On my list is to play a round at St. Andrews and visit Roslyn Chapel. My husband was a Mason - so there are special meanings in there for me. Take Care of you for me and take ANDY to live in PEACE without weeping and his JOY outline the lives he touched without ceasing and may your LOVE fill the world with angel wings - tenderly beating.....All the Best of Who I am ...Suzzanne

We had an amazing two weeks in the UK in the summer of \'99. My daughter had recently started working in St Albans--just outside London, and when Mike graduated from HS, we brought Grandma, and Mike\'s best friend along and spent a week in England, doing the sights, then the second week we all rented a \"cottage\" outside the tiny town of Glass, near Inverness, Scotland, where we spent one of the most enchanting weeks of our lives. We loved the country and the people and the tiny roads--it felt like 1950 there and I personally loved it. The castles were fun, but it wasn\'t about that. It just seemed more pure--not so defiled as in the US. Just be ready for the fact that the sun doesn\'t go down til almost midnight... I think your idea of taking Andy with you is wonderful. You will see many beautifully wild and wonderful places to leave a bit of him behind. We are taking a trip to Ireland and now you\'ve given me the idea to bring a bit of Mike along on that trip. I also like your pear tree idea. Will try to do some research before commenting. I am wondering about the same idea for a tree we are having planted for Mike in a local arboretum.

Have a terrific trip to Scotland ! Love and Hugs, Cherie
