Spirit Airlines, American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and other airlines provide service. 74 flights are typically available weekly, though weekend and holiday itineraries may vary, so check ahead. Alternatively, you can take the car ferry to Ceiba, Puerto Rico, take the taxi. Though more expensive, flights to nearby islands are more reliable and accessible than the ferry, because you can often book online rather than in person only.
As mentioned at the top of this page, renting a car is your best bet for navigating the main island with your home base as our Inn and also ensuring you can easily visit Culebra and/or Vieques. You can pick up your rental car at the airport upon arrival in San Juan and head out to the Rainforest Inn to enjoy the only tropical rainforest in the US Forest system. Then, if you also want to escape to some world-class beaches (Culebra’s Flamenco Beach ranks as 4th best beach in the world), you will drive from the Inn to Cieba Avis Rent-A-Car. Upon handing over your keys, an Avis employee will happily take you to either the Cieba ferry terminal or the Cieba airport. From there, you can travel to Vieques or Culebra; stay for a night, or more; and take an early flight off whatever island you visit back to the San Juan International Airport on the day you fly home. This will be less time consuming than returning by way of Cieba to San Juan with you rental car.

To be honest, we’ve heard many people do and it’s mostly because they don’t know how to get there any other way. You’ve just settled into your seat when suddenly, a ferry employee comes to you and demands you leave the boat to make room for a last-minute passenger. A Vieques resident shows up just before the scheduled departure and needs to get on the boat to go home.

In other words, if we planned to go to Vieques and come back that night, our trip would have been ruined. As it happens, we were going to Vieques for 4 days, so the fact that this was a one-way trip didn’t matter to us. There are a few things we didn’t know before we took the ferry to Vieques that could have easily ruined our trip. Fortunately, none of them interfered with our trip and our journey went off without a hitch. But it really would have royally annoyed us off if we got all the way to the ferry and found out we couldn’t go.
