Garage Fall

Well, today at 4PM I was supposed to get my first prosthesis, but at one thirty I was washing my wheelchair down and slipped on the wet concrete and went down, bigtime. My foot and leg flew out from under me and I came down with all my weight on the stump, and on the way down my shoulder smashed into the bumper of the car. I was fortunate because nothing was broken and the wound held together, just wounded pride and too much bruising and swelling to get the liner and the socket on. This sucks. The shoulder is bad enough so that I cannot operate the wheelchair well. I can still get it around, so I know I'm lucky, but it still bites.

Thanks, I just got back from a visit to my PT who did some manipulation work on my stump and shoulder. It loosened me up a lot and I\'m sure that will speed the healing. After that I went to the see Michael, my prosthetist, and we made a new appointment for Monday at 3PM. Oh, and I got to see my leg and foot and left it sitting there with my shoe on it. That really brought it much closer to reality for my. I am getting positive and excited again. I have to keep my wheelchair and crutches activities to a minimum until then to give the shoulder and stump a chance to heal, but Monday looms just around the corner.

Well the apt w/ Michael was good but the following day, tues, the PT with the leg in action was a flop. I had no control of the follow through, the reason being that I could not put my full weight onto the socket, too painfull. Tried all kinds of ways to get around this to no avail. So, the next day (last night) we spent four hours working with the socket with padding to take preasure away from the bruised part and in general to get the socket ready for more PT action today. We gave it up at 8:30PM and today I went to PT without the leg. Sharon (my PT) worked on the bruised part of the stump with some kind of light treatment and her magic hands doing their job and after about an hour the sore part of the stump was half the size of when we started. Very encourageing, the new plan is to let the stump heal over the next 4 days the do another light treatment next Tuesday and cast a new socket Wednesday and back to PT with the leg one week from today. In the meantime I can exercise, make some muscles (as Arnold says), and learn new wheelie tricks with my wheelchair. Ta..
