Funny moments from Football World
That was the moment, for me, that Mariners baseball got fun again. The Chiefs went on to win the overtime coin toss and drove down to score a touchdown, winning the game without the Bills touching the ball. A couple of months later, the league changed the overtime rules for the playoffs to ensure that both teams get to touch the ball at least once. While neither of these teams made it to the Super Bowl, this game literally changed the sport—and raised the bar for quarterbacking. To forget all that mediocrity on the field, we decided to focus on the many tremendously funny moments of the 2015 season.
His speeches and quotes have left many people laughing and appreciating his humour. In 2005, he gave a hilarious eulogy for fellow Man United legend George Best. Eagle-eyed Gary Neville did actually spot the imposter, and pointed him out to the rest of the team. But Power, a big Eric Cantona fan, apparently replied “shut it, I’m doing this for Eric” Bravo, sneaking onto the pitch, and telling Gary Neville to shut it. Francis Lee & Norman Hunter were room-mates at the 1970 World Cup, two seasoned professionals with just about every major honour to their names.
Lancaster lost by the way, and it was Devine’s fault. But this particular dog/football story has a more comedic element to it. It takes place in the 1962 during the World Cup in Chile, as Jimmy Greaves’ England take on the holders Brazil. On rushes a small black dog, chasing after the ball with more energy than some of the England players could muster. Several players try to apprehend the dog, but none are as clever about it as Greaves, who gets down on all fours to beckon the dog towards him.
The Vols lived every program’s dream. So what was left to prove in Beijing? Though it may have been unfair to ask for more from the best men’s skater in the world, legacies are made at the Olympics. And for as cruel as 2018 was for Chen, 2022 was glorious. He set a new world record in the short program, and then landed five quad jumps in the free skate (one coming at a particularly climactic moment of Elton John’s “Rocket Man”). His skating was as daring as it was emphatic.
Plunging down the leagues now, this is possibly the funniest own goal of all time. Chris Brass has become an Internet sensation thanks to this entertaining error. Paolo Di Canio is one of the best players to have plied his trade in the Premier League.
As the pair left the field side-by-side, Lee lost his patience with Hunter’s goading, swinging wildly and repeatedly from the ankle with such venom that he floored the much taller Leeds man. In the end it took Derby boss Dave Mackay to intervene and lead his man from the field, with John Motson bemoaning that “a side to football we really do not want to see has unfortunately reared its ugly head”. In Week 15, Ryan started at quarterback for Indianapolis in a game against the Vikings. While the Colts haven’t been an offensive juggernaut this season—the team ranks near the bottom of the league in points scored—they held a 36-7 lead in the third quarter. And Brady wasn’t on the opposing sideline—it was Kirk Cousins, a QB who has so frequently withered under the bright lights of national broadcasts that he’s earned a nickname for his own choke jobs.
MJ calls Magic “old dog” and challenges him to a game of one-on-one, turning the Lakers legend into a squealing kid. I can hardly wrap my head around how improbable this season was. I was happy just to see Pujols don the birds on the bat again; I never imagined that he’d inspire the same fear in pitchers or the Funny Moments in Football collective anticipation in fans that he did more than a decade ago. In life and in sports, just because something makes for a great story doesn’t mean that it will happen. But in 2022, Albert Pujols reminded us that it can. The state of Hawaii has almost as much, if not more, love for Alo as Sooners fans do.
Thompson kept at it until he could, and came up with huge shots and needed stops for the Warriors in the same signature ways he always had. If all of that seems inevitable, it isn’t—and that’s precisely the point. In the third inning, Rhys Hoskins came up with two men on base. He launched a Spencer Strider fastball into the left-field seats. The place erupted as Hoskins spiked his bat. It had been a long time since any Phillies fan got to celebrate a moment like that.
One of the first, and certainly the most high-profile, to take a stand against abuse from the terraces was the King himself. But when playing for United in a league match with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in January 1995, Cantona crossed a line even he would have been surprised at. Jamie Redknapp’s England career never really reached the heights it was supposed to did it?
Except Redknapp, who never fully recovered from the humiliation of seeing someone do that to one of his “shots”. It is 1995, and an international friendly at Wembley between England & Colombia. The game is a pretty drab affair; the commentators are in danger of dozing off as Terry Venables’ side attempts to mould into their new fangled “Christmas Tree” formation. Alan Shearer is going through a dry spell in front of goal, Paul Ince is shaking his fist but not really getting much done, and David Seaman is contemplating growing a ponytail at the other end. Producing a razor blade he had stashed in his gloves pre-match, Rojas cut himself on the forehead, and fell to the floor with blood streaming from the wound.
