Funny and Scary

I think American exceptionalism goes way back in our history. I also think it\'s deeply rooted in religion and racism...things like \"Manifest Destiny\" and the \"Monroe Doctrine\". We Americans have been indoctrinated to believe that we\'re far superior to all the other countries and peoples of the world...including our own endemic people. In many ways it\'s a postcolonial story...a former British colony setting out to \"conquer\" endemic people and a vast expanse of land.

Who else but a deeply racist society would put a mass murderer like Andrew Jackson on its currency? It\'s interesting that all of the nominees in the major categories of the Oscars this year are white-skinned people.

Things seem to change but really stay much the same.

I\'ve seen similar blogs online where they document the consolidation of US media. There used to be hundreds and hundreds of independent newspapers, TV stations, radio stations. Now it\'s down to a handful that dole out the stories to the rest.
