FREE COLLEGE for people/families who make under $125,000

"All government programs to "help" students financially, will become moot, if the government takes a simple step: make all public universities free  (just like EVERY UNIVERSITY in ALL other civilized countries (EXCEPT USA) has always been FREE).

Total tuition cost at all public colleges, for ALL STUDENTS attending, came to $62.6 billion in 2012.

If the federal government takes the $69 billion it currently spends helping students cover the cost of college through grants, tax breaks, and work-study funds and instead simply cover tuition at all public schools for anyone who wants to attend - the government would actually be SAVING $6.4 BILLION.

Its a no-brainer:  Make public colleges FREE FOR ALL/funded by government and you save 6.4 BILLION DOLLARS.  So why aren't they doing it?  Why wasn't this done originally?   "We the People" could finally just go to college because one wants to study, instead of having to worry about the money, and the future debt and filling out a zillion forms and being threatened to be thrown out if you don't get the money together and appointments at the banks and all the other crap that goes on from "funding" university tuition.

That would give all students of all income backgrounds an equal chance to simply attend school, anytime, at any age because they want to study, instead of the money- GAME that is played with it now.

It would put pressure on private schools like Stanford, Yale and Harvard to reduce their tuition to compete with the now FREE public universities.  What are they WAITING for?

It would also lower crime as the more educated a person is, the more tolerant/less violent they are - this holds true for all students with higher education, except for students who spend their education "cheating through school" - those students are genuine future criminals, which is why i'd like to see the death penalty for all crime done by white collar criminals, they had their chance, they blew it, their life is over.

Stanford Will Now Be Free To All Students From Families That Earn Less Than $125,000 Per Year

Stanford is the first university to take the first step.  All Stanford students, or if under age 23, the student's family who make under $125,000 will attend Stanford for FREE.

it may be more politically correct to simply make all public universities FREE for everyone out there, that\'s how it is in europe. do they have the numbers on that?

It\'s a matter of priorities. If our elected representatives in Congress have something called patriotism, then they would want to make the US stronger and more competitive in business and militarily. In that case it would be a good idea.

But it\'s not going to happen, because they don\'t have any patriotism. Their loyalty is to the wealthy and powerful people who got them into office...the people who fill their pockets when they leave office with million-dollar \"consulting fees\".

I don\'t think they have any loyalty to the Constitution or to this country. They prove that by the actions they take...or don\'t take...every day. We\'re becoming a country where only the children of the wealthy elite can get a good education in prep schools and pricey universities.

Oh, wait...we\'re already there.

I have $50,000 in student loans. If I stay on disability for 3 more years they will forgive $30,000 but that still leaves $20,000 to pay off. My credit is ruined, my bills pile up and I keep getting letters saying I have to pay. Boy do I wish that college was free!

diane, you can open up your own collection agency, its $35 to register as a business, then buy your debt for pennies on the dollar and then clear it.

also teach america does a forgiveness thing as well?

if the government will save over SIX BILLION DOLLARS making public universities FREE and we have the numbers to prove that, why the hell don\'t they do it while obama is still in office. seriously. get to it obama!
