Four Ways To Immediately Start Selling Thailand Tourism
So please don't nail me to the wall because some dish you tried while attending some meditation camp in a rural part of Thailand did not make the list! But all the food listed on this list are all fairly well-known Thai dishes that you can pretty much find ANYWHERE in Thailand at most restaurants across the country.
With hundreds (or more) of local dishes in Thailand food and drink (thailandtourism.biz), there are obviously other healthy food dishes to be found, especially if you go to some remote village corner and find some unique rural dishes. I believe that I'm just as likely to have bad timing and get a stomach bug from a restaurant as a street stall (their ingredients are coming from the same places!). Personally, I don't worry if street food, or food from anywhere else for that matter, is going to make me sick.
How can you make sure you're ordering clean food? From street stalls and most restaurants you can order food to go. Ask for it for takeaway" in English or try saying glup baan" in Thai, literally back home". No one is going to rush your meal, so if you're ready to leave and haven't been helped, get up and find someone to pay.
Eat, enjoy, then pay when you're done. Someone will give you a menu then come back to take your order. Ordering in restaurants here is the same as pretty much anywhere else in the world.
The word Pla," for example, should make you say Blah!" It basically means deep-fried." And keep an eye on fancy versions of rice (sweet coconut) or iced tea—they generally carry serious doses of sugar. But there are plenty of boobie traps on the Thai menu as well. And soups like tom yum rely much less on sodium than egg drops do, and much more on healthy spices like lemongrass and cilantro.
Spicy peanut sauce is a healthier choice by far than some of the heavy Chinese sauces. And many of the dishes you'll find here fill that role—the summer rolls are like spring rolls, without the long hot oil bath. The meat is sometimes served raw, I had raw pork this way years ago, which wasn't clever.
Finely chopped meat ( or tofu or mushrooms), usually cooked, mixed with herbs. I love vegetables with cashews, or tofu with cashews, I'm not much of a meat eater and non animal protein is hard to find sometimes. Chicken ( or other) with cashewnuts.
They're not greasy, or shouldn't be. Sometimes we order them with rice if we're really hungry. The sauces contain a little garlic, soy and sugar.
They're all good and this is the stuff that my children love to eat. These usually come in chicken, vegetable, prawn or tofu varieties. They're full of vitamin C so eat up. It's the little ones you've got to watch!
The bigger ones are just another vegetable, so mild my children will eat them without complaint.
