Seriously, this is something anyone who cares about kids should check out. The way they deal with child abusers here in this state makes me furious sometimes. The Florida Legislature has given Child Services a mandate to make "keeping families together" their top priority. I'm totally opposed to that.

Child services is a crazed group of people who have no concept of what protecting children means. Di you hear about the Juatina Pelletier fiasco in Massachusetts?
I googled the name and read an article in the Boston Globe. That is typical of the way state agencies handle some of these cases...making arbitrary decisions without the expertise needed to make those decisions based on sound scientific or medical knowledge.
In Florida, they often make decisions based on religious ideas rather than science or medicine. Or they just fail to follow up on cases. We had one of those recently where they just lost a little girl in the system. No one knew what happened to her, it\'s now believed she was killed.
We also made headlines when they found dozens and dozens of unmarked graves on the grounds of a boy\'s reformatory in northern Florida. Witnesses say the boys were simply beaten to death by the staff at the facility. It took a big fight to force the State to allow the forensic team to look for more bodies. They wanted to just forget the whole thing. This is a tourist state.
I don\'t remember how many they\'ve found so far, there were a lot of them. Their parents, those that are still living, deserve to know the truth.
I guess it\'s brothers and sisters now that want to know what happened, these are old graves. This state has a lot of ugly things in its past.
Insane. This isn\'t just Florida. It\'s everywhere. The sociopath who stalked me for a year was a registered sex offender. When he got divorced, he fought his ex for custody of their kid (for the sole purpose of control over her and taking away the kid). Since sociopaths are good in court, he won. It didn\'t apparently matter that he was a registered sex offender (for a sex crime against a child). On top of that, he lived right next to an elementary school (yet was not allowed within 1000 ft of one by law). Nobody did anything about it. I reported it all and nothing was done. I can\'t imagine the permanent psychological damage his kid will have for the rest of his life. When he was 4-5, when I knew him, he already had severe psychological problems and serious behavior problems at school.
Yep, this pretty much makes me sick. I\'m so thankful I didn\'t have to deal with any kind of abuse growing up!! I\'ve seen some horrible situations being in the medical field. Not pretty at all. The emotional trauma lasts for a lifetime, and some of these \"people\" (because it totally includes women)!! get off scott free, and/or are not punished for the wrongs done to them.
We wonder why our kids are messed up. We have no protection for the innocent people in this Country. Come here from another Country with no citizenship rights, and we\'ll get you a lawyer, a job....a home......you\'ve hit the lottery!

Darla, I automatically corrected that in my brain and didn\'t even consciously notice the mistake. I guess I\'m just used to reading posts by people like myself with cognitive issues. ME/CFS is a nuisance, isn\'t it?...in addition to all the other issues it causes. I\'m thinking I might have accidentally tossed the shop manuals for my truck into the recycling bin along with some old telephone books. The manuals are totally irreplaceable and critically important to the maintenance of my truck.
Darla and Agent Smith: I\'m especially sensitive to the issue of child abuse as you know, because of my own abused childhood. The more I study this issue and the more I remember my childhood, the more clearly I see how it distorted everything in my life. Child abuse is not something \"kids get over\", it changes their lives.
I recently heard that malnutrition during childhood...I had severe restrictions on what I was allowed to eat...causes physical damage to the developing brain. That could account for the serious neurological deficits I\'ve had since childhood...and there was also physical abuse of a type that has been shown to result in damage similar to that of a stroke.
Until recently, I blamed myself for all these disabilities. That\'s what I was taught to do. Now I blame the people who abused me.
People who tell us we shouldn\'t \"play the blame game\" are invariably people who have a lot to hide....think about it. Drunks, druggies, and sociopaths would love to see a totally \"no-fault\" world like they have with collision insurance.
Sounds like we\'re already half-way there. Rape, for example, is rarely ever prosecuted these days. And even if they\'re found guilty, rapists often just get community service or \"counseling\". That\'s just wrong, wrong, wrong.
Sexual assault and child abuse are far more serious crimes than property crimes like burglary, yet the legal system treats crimes against property with ten times the punishment it doles out to sexual assault and child abuse.
