Flare-up healed with curcumin

In September of this year, I experienced for the first time since 2006 a flare-up of diverticulitis. We'd been through a stressful summer - family deaths and trips for memorial services. An early September trip to Chicago for a more delightful family event, a wedding, had us staying in a hotel with a Baskin-Robbins right around the corner, so I indulged two nights in a row with a coconut ice cream filled with hard nuts.

As my previous update said, I have been eating nuts regularly again. Mostly pecans, occasionally cashews - both fairly soft. I was still avoiding almonds and other very hard and less digestible nuts and foods.

I think between the stress and the hard nuts two days in a row, it was just a little too much.

So, what did I do?

I've posted my regimen which includes supplements of slippery elm, ginger, curcumin, enzymes, and probiotics. I did NOT want to take antibiotics if I could avoid it. So, I immediately went on a two day liquid diet, tripled my dose of curcumin, added cinnamon and doubled my ginger, and made sure I upped my water intake beyond my 6+ glasses a day.

Rationale: the curcumin has documented anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties; cinnamon and ginger are both known to help with GI problems and also have mild anti-bacterial properties. I figured if I upped these dosages, it would quell the bacterial buildup. I also did some research and discovered a truly outstanding probiotic: Jarrow-dopholis (see http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=271050&catid=184257&aid=338666&aparam=goobase_filler - also available elsewhere on the net). I added this supplement on top of my probiotic/enzyme (now the Rainbow Light brand).

Results: after 1 week, the inflammation and discomfort had subsided. I kept up my triple dose of curcmin for another 10 days (figuring the usual antibiotic protocol would be appropriate) . then I slowly backed off to a double dose, and am now back to my single capsule twice a day.

For what it is worth. Anyone wishing more information can feel free to contact me at my email, pmrose@buffalo.edu.

So today, I am back to my happy-feeling-great self aside from a fall cold.

Hope you are all faring well out there!
