Finally Home After Surgery!

Hi Everyone, I'm finally home! I was in the hospital for a week and came home today! What a journey! Sugery almost took 3 hours longer than it was suppose to because my Dr. tried to do everything in one shot, but it didn't work bc I'm so little, so she need to start it all over again.
I don't remember much from the first 3-4 days, that was probably the morphine lol. I had alotta visitors, but I would have liked to see my bf more, but he had to work and go to school :(
They took out the foley on sunday, but my blatter didn't wake up that they it was so painful they needed to put it back it, and it all drained once they did. I also had a rectal tube sutured into my rectum, that was nooo fun at all!!!! So they cut it out monday and took the foley out again so I would start going to the bathroom on my own..
I'm sooo sore, can't walk for very long bc its painful and I get out of breath really easy. Sitting isn't easy either and I feel lonely like I want to cry. Is that normal?
Anybody have suggestions on anything like pain, showering, eating or things I should be doing, i'd really appreciate it!

Wow! Well I am so glad that you have made it through the first surgery. You didn\'t mention it, but I am assuming you have a bag now? How is that going? Eating is pretty boring at first. I didn\'t have much of an appetite but I forced myself to eat because I was so thin. Just eat things that are easy on your stomach. Soft foods: yogurt, pudding, pasta, bananas, mashed potatoes... stuff like that. I also drank ensure to get more calories. I didn\'t have a rectal tube, but I am assuming that is making your butt hurt? I honestly spent my first 4 weeks at home on the couch. It hurt to get up and I didn\'t have any energy either. My butt bones and back were really sore too because I was so boney! I bought a foam pad and sat/laid on it. It helped a lot. Don\'t worry, it really does get easier, it just takes time. Remember that you just went through a serious surgery and you need to give your body a break. Don\'t try to do too much at first! I showered every other day and used a shower chair. For pain, take your meds as you need them. I cried a lot during my first few weeks home. I was feeling helpless and bored/lonely during the day because I couldn\'t do anything and I felt like a bother to my boyfriend. Recovery is rough, there is no denying that, but it is so worth it! Please feel free to message me on here or fb if you ever have any questions or just need to chat. I am thinking about you and praying for a speedy recovery!!!

I\'m so sorry you had to go through all that. The regular surgery itself is bad enough. I hope you heel very quickly and feel better soon.

Hey girl! I also felt out of breath a lot in the beginning. I did the same thing as Sarah as far as showers - I had a chair in there to sit on. It helped A LOT. If I tried to stand up I would get really light headed and so sick feeling, I\'d have to run out of the shower and lay on the floor or bed until I could see. You just lost a major organ - and the one that absorbs all your water so it is a huge adjustment for your body! I already told you, but I was also a huge bum the first few weeks.. I just laid in bed and watched my shows. lol I think the most walking I did was to the bathroom hah. I am so happy you are out of the hospital now though! What a relief!! That rectal tube does not sound like fun :( But it\'s over with..in the past! I promise this will all be worth it, just keep telling yourself that on the down days. And it is okay to feel sad and cry sometimes like we talked about earlier.. This was a life changing thing so it\'s normal!! Lots of prayers for you girl!!!

I emptied my bag a LOT! My stoma nurses told me I had a really active stoma, so I felt like I was emptying it every couple hours. When I first got home it was even worse. My output was really liquidy, but once I started eating more stuff, it thickened up a bit. You should also ask your surgeon if you can take imodium or fiber with a bag. I never did, but I know now that with the j-pouch the imodium works wonders. I\'m not sure if it would be the same with a bag though... hang in there and remember it\'s only temporary!!
