FENN Swaging Machines Are Used For Pointing, Sizing and Forming Metal Rod, Wire or Tube

Essentially, swaging is a cold forging process that utilizes rapid hammer blows to create the desired shape from the rod or tube stock. A swaging machine works by using two or four split dies that separate and close up to 2,000 times per minute. The dies are mounted in the machine’s spindle which is rotated by a motor. As the spindle rotates the dies ride on a sequence of rollers that surround the spinning spindle (looks like a roller bearing). The diameter of the rollers is larger than the dies so as the spindle revolves and the dies pass over the rollers they are pushed together by centrifugal force. The rotation of the dies and the roller cage allow swaging to occur in both the front and back of the dies, thus creating a variety of shapes.


Rotary swaging machines are most commonly utilized to swage rod or tube stock into internal shapes. However, they are also capable of external swaging as well. During external swaging, a tube or rod is inserted into a hardened steel swaging die of the proper diameter. The stock is then attached to a draw bench trolley that exerts significant pressure on the stock, thereby swaging it into its desired shape.


For tubing swaging applications, an internal mandrel can be inserted into the workpiece tube to help control and modify its wall thickness. Depending on the application, the swaging operation can be accomplished through a series of steps that may include inserting the workpiece into a swaging die of the correct diameter, reducing the tube to the required length, and finally drawing the tube.
