Feeling strange - me babbling!
I guess it is a bit of the January blues. I am not depressed, nor and I on top of the world. Just - strange. I feel like I should be doing stuff. Not sure what stuff; but something.
I went for a walk and coffee with my good friends and neighbours. It was really nice catching up. We have all been on our separate ways over the last month. Tonight our friend Leslie came for dinner. She was on a cruise to Antarctica just before Christmas. Her hubby Jack had planned the trip before he died. She went with her brother instead. She said it was healing. She is grieving but doing well. She and Jack were very very close.
Trying to get back in to some semblance of health after the Christmas overindulgence. We go to the pool and exercise 3 times a week. It was my first time since we got back from Ottawa and I did feel it! We did swim once in Ottawa - we took the twins to a wave pool. The girls loved it. I realized that I am not as 'athletic' as I used to be!
As I watch the news, I realize how lucky I have been. We have been able to travel quite extensively. We were lucky because we visited or lived in countries that are not particularly safe these days. We lived in Russia for 6 months. We lived in Turkey for 4 months - their government is a bit scary now. We lived in China for 6 months. We spent a few days in Kiev - it breaks my heart to see what is happening there now. We visited Brazil and today I am hearing they had a bit of a riot as a result of their elections. Having said that, I probably would be on the next plane to somewhere exotic if life didn't get in the way. Our next trip will be back to Ottawa in March. Cevyn and the twins are a bigger draw than globe trotting right now.
I try not to be concerned about the climate change issue. But it scares me. I met Joe in Churchill, Manitoba 55 years ago - it is the Polar Bear Capital of Canada as the bears migrate through the town. One of my first tasks as a nurse there was to remove about 100 sutures from a guy's head - he had been mauled by a polar bear. Now the ice is melting and the bear population is dwindling because the ice is melting so fast. The bears go on the ice floes to hunt for food. If the melting continues, those beautiful beasts will become extinct.
Over Christmas, in Ottawa, there was a blizzard and a huge dump of snow. Over the new year, it poured rain and most of the snow melted. I hear the weather in California is bizarre and I heard on the news that the avalance risk in the Rockies is dire and is likely to be for quite awhile. The freeze, thaw issue makes avalanches almost inevitable.
I never saw myself as a control freak but it ticks me off that I can't control much of anything these days! I am reminded daily that I am getting old. It was particularly obvious when I went sledding with the girls! Getting down and up was not a pretty sight!
Okay, enough whining. Please let 2023 be a better year!
So, I feel strange. Glad to be healthy, sad to have lost some important people last year, worried about the future for Cevyn and the twins, our pride and joy.

I hear ya sweet friend. The state of our earth, for all human, animals, and nature is quite sad...and scary. I am finally in a position to be able to travel the world, and yet, the world is such a dangerous place, I know I'll never see many of the places I'd love to see otherwise. Heck, I'd even love to see the US capitol and tool around DS again, and several other US cities, but they've become too dangerous. The beauty of tropical islands, lush mountains, etc. draw my heart, but most of the most beautiful places on this earth are far to dangerous for me to even think about traveling to see. Yep, so sad. But I am thankful for what I have experienced and do look forward to any adventures yet to come. And I am so happy that you have been able to travel as extensively as you have!!!
I was talking to my Tammy the other day and asked why about a certain subject and she said, "because you're a control freak".....I vehemently protested....she just laughed and laughed and laughed. LOL! And I too.....how the heck did that happen......am feeling the aches, pains and disappointment of abilities (lack thereof) as I'm aging. Why is it when you can do stuff, you can no longer DO stuff!!
Thanks for sharing your heart with us dear friend. I pray you experience many, many, many more happy adventures and remain in good health always.
BIG (((hugs)))
Kudos to you for trying to stay in shape! I really need to resume my regular walks. I don’t know how I got out of the habit these last few months but do need to get back to it, along with some yoga.
Yes, I do believe I may be a bit of a control freak. Seems like as I have aged, it has become a dire world and I feel so helpless to do anything about it. I feel rather like I should be doing something too, not sure what. I think I feel much better today because the sun has shown its beauty. It has been a dreary winter and seemingly a long one this year. It sounds like snow again tomorrow.
I envy your knowledge of the world and your travels. We have never been able to do much of that due to health, money, and perhaps priorities.
I hope that you are able to come to terms with these issues the next few weeks. It seems a lot is on your mind and I hope you can find some peace.
Understand about the crazy weather! We just got another 15 inches of snow here. I Was just reading this is the snowiest winter in 30 years! While it's beautiful and we need the moisture...I'm already over it. And there is so much left yet to go! I need to move further south.
Hugs and love!!
Marlene, I share your feelings of getting older, of not having any control and the frustration that goes along with that. I see so many injustices against both humans and our precious wildlife and fully acknowledge I do not possess the energy to do anything about it. I worry about the future for my daughter Chase and my 5 precious grandbabies.
Love you lady, please feel free to ramble away!
<3 Merrilee
Kudos for getting healthy, every day is a plus. Aging is definitely felt…hugs and love.
