Feeding the Hungry
The company where I work has sevearl businesses, and 1 is packaging snack items like cheerios, cheezeits, m&ms etc, and we sell them to office supply wholesalers, so that if you for example by the supplies for your company, you could order a bunch of prepacked snacks and put them out in your lunchroom. No one has to run to Walmart. This is a multi-million dollar business for us somehow. Anyways, there is a challenge to buying these food items - there is an expiration date. So if you stock too little, the big customers fine us, if we stock too many, we have to throw expiring food away. I've only worked here for a year, but in that time the rule was it gets destroyed. Apparently in the past workers here would damage product or the boxes, and just take the food home. But I saw this as a big waste, there are so many homeless and hungry people here in Jacksonville. I prayed that the owners would change their mind and allow us to give the food to the homeless. Yesterday I saw one of the owners, and asked to speak with him. I explained what we are doing at our church, our outreach, and how this food would help so so many people. His answer, he had no problem with us giving this food to the needy in town. I was overjoyed in his response, and thanked him no end. Today the warehouse manager told our food buyer that he had a bunch of food to toss out. The buyer, he has the next office over, knew of my conversation, and told him it was approved to give to our church for the homeless. I went down there, and we have 3 pallets of cheese-its. 30 individual packs per box, 12 boxes per pallet. I think that's like 6000 bags of snacks. It may not be the most balanced meal, but when you're hungry, it will sure help. I'll ask some brothers and sisters at church to help me pick these up tomorrow, and take them downtown. I am feeling better than last night and even early this morning, I am so glad that God has put me where I can actually do a little bit of good with my life and time.
