Family struggle
I found this site a few days ago and have been pouring over the advice, stories and struggles that many people have shared in regards to dealing with bed-wetting. This has been something that my son has struggled with his entire life so it is so heartening to read other's experiences that are so similar to his. I had my son just after my 17th birthday and it has been just the two of us until I recently got married and had another baby in the last few years. My son's father has sporadically been in his life after we split up when my son was three. Every since Ty was a young child he was never dry at night. When he was younger, he managed the bed wetting by using pull-ups.
Tyler has always been a very confident kid ever since he was little. He had many friends and was extremely active in sports. During grade school he went on sleepovers and tournaments with his teams but just always wore a pull-up without much concern. I started to realize that his bedwetting was effecting his self esteem when he was about 12 years old. He was getting ready to go to a baseball tournament and told me he did not think he wanted to go. He was one of the best on the team and he had been looking forward to this particular tournament for over a year. He never voiced concern over his bedwetting in the past so before the trip I had a discussion with him where he told me he was embarrassed someone would find out he still wore pull-ups to bed. He got through the tournament without anyone finding out but he became was more selective and careful whenever he was in a situation that meant he had to sleep away from home.
In the past few years he has been managing with dietary and fluid maintenance and tried to stay away from using regular night time protection. Although my son did start to wear pull-ups again because he said he was sick of constantly waking up wet. My son is now 16 and after a dry spell (with a few occasional accidents) that lasted about a year, he started to bed wet again.
Bedwetting throughout his high school years have been very trying for him. My son plays two varsity high school sports which requires him to travel with the team a few times a year. He has mentioned that he was considering not playing a sport this upcoming school year. He did not say specifically that it was because of his bedwetting although i know that is the reason. I hate to see my son struggle with his self esteem because of this problem. None of his friends know and I just do not want him to feel alone (which I know he does). I hope that he will outgrow it or learn to live where this is not such a big factor in his life.
