What are Explosion Proof Valves?
Explosion proof valves are specifically designed to be used in hazardous locations that contain flammable gases, vapors, liquids and ignitable dust. They feature thick metal components and are encased in a flameproof enclosure to prevent any internal sparks from igniting the combustible materials and creating a larger explosion. The explosion proof solenoid valve’s coil shell is also designed to contain any resulting blast and ensure that the gases escape in a controlled manner. This is accomplished by the use of long, narrow paths that allow for the gas to enter and pass through the coil, but not enough for it to reach ignition temperature or cause an explosion.


Electrical sparks are the leading causes of equipment failure and explosions, so it’s important to make sure that any equipment you plan on using in a hazardous environment follows strict standards. There are two common ways of doing this – intrinsically safe and explosion proof.


The difference between the two depends on what your facility requires. Intrinsically safe equipment is able to limit electrical-spark energy to levels that cannot ignite combustible substances in a hazardous environment, making it a great option for portable instruments and devices that don’t need high voltage or power. Explosion proof equipment, on the other hand, can withstand an external explosion and keep the flames and gases contained inside the device’s enclosure.


To determine which type of equipment will be most suitable for your application, look for labels indicating class, division and group. Each marking serves its own purpose, with the XP label highlighting explosion proofing, the EX label focusing on hazardous location certification and the IEC Ex or ATEX labels highlighting the gas groups (and temperature classes) that can be safely used.Explosion Proof Valves
