Exploring Medical Professionals' and Students' Views on Medical Marijuana: A Comprehensive Review

The global interest in the therapeutic potential of medical marijuana has surged in recent years, prompting significant changes in attitudes and policies worldwide. As medical cannabis gains recognition as a viable treatment option, understanding healthcare professionals' and students' perspectives becomes increasingly crucial. In this article, we delve into a comprehensive review of existing literature to uncover trends and insights regarding medical professionals' and students' attitudes and knowledge about medical marijuana.

Conducting the review by PRISMA guidelines, researchers scoured PubMed and Google Scholar for studies exploring healthcare professionals' and medical students perceptions of medical cannabis. The search spanned from 1971 to 2019, with a focus on primary data studies and the exclusion of non-English papers and non-primary data sources.

Out of the multitude of sources examined, 40 studies met the stringent inclusion criteria. These studies, conducted between 1971 and 2019 and involving over 8000 respondents, provided valuable insights into attitudes towards medical marijuana. Notably, nearly half of all respondents (49.9%) expressed support for the legalization of medical cannabis, with a notable increase in support observed from 1991 to 2019. Interestingly, medical professionals exhibited a significantly higher rate of support for legalization compared to their student counterparts.

Beyond legalization, respondents voiced a strong desire for increased education on medical marijuana. Concerns regarding its potential for dependence and addiction were also prevalent among respondents. However, attitudes towards these issues remained relatively unchanged over the last decade.

The findings of this review underscore the importance of education and training programs focused on medical cannabis. As acceptance of medical marijuana grows within the medical community, it is imperative to equip healthcare professionals and students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate its complexities effectively. By prioritizing education, we can ensure the safe and responsible use of medical marijuana as a therapeutic intervention.

While the review sheds light on evolving attitudes and knowledge surrounding medical marijuana, it is not without limitations. Covariate-based analyses were lacking, and studies published after June 2019 were excluded, potentially limiting the scope of the findings.

The comprehensive review provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of medical professionals' and students' attitudes towards medical marijuana. As legislative and societal attitudes continue to evolve, education remains a critical tool in promoting responsible and informed use of medical cannabis in healthcare settings. Future research should explore temporal comparisons and investigate the impact of various factors on attitudes and knowledge surrounding medical marijuana.

In a rapidly changing landscape, understanding the views of medical professionals and students is essential for advancing the conversation around medical marijuana and ensuring its safe and effective integration into healthcare practice.
