Evil Stepmother Makes her Presence Known...
Well I have been very excited (and a bit nervous) but good since I have 2 days free of work with time to get things in order. Naturally, I was doing the fun stuff first (looks like a bomb exploded in my bedroom as I have clothes all over to pick and choose) Then I had a nice relaxing chat with my new love. But I knew I had to get the dreadful things done before I go. Well, I finally called and got a tax attorney for a consult. After his hearing my story, his advice was to just go ahead and pay it. It seems my mere $7100 was not such a big deal . He asked if I could pay the full amt.... I said that I am in the process of accessing his ESOP funds but not until that goes through. He then explained that they normally charge $1500 a case and could not guarantee he would get anything knocked off.
Next call was on hold forever, but did finally get a real person with the credit union who has our mortgage title. I wanted to get info and email to send and deposit a check that I have had from my home owner's policy to cover half the cost for a new roof. He had me hold while he got the person who could help me (but disconnected me) So I stewed and (after listening to the endless babble and info between the please holds, did hear that they do allow electronic transfers to deposit checks)
I then did the paperwork to cash in his annuity. (But have to see what the % is for fed and state tax to deduct... and get it notarized before I can send it off.) Nothing like waiting til the last minute.
Oldhabits die hard... after that first phone call was again feeling invisable, ignored and unimportant...and found myself in tears. Then picked myself up to the next task and plugged on... each time with another issue... but it did settle and become not as much of a crisis. I am just feeling like these damn obstacles are kind of like that damn evil stepmother... throwing that monkey wrench my way. I WILL deal with them.
Yes... reality is all around... there is really no prince or princesses... or evil steps.... just our lives which we do eventually have to face and go forward (the key is with hope and grace rather than fear and avoidance)

If you are not on the account, and if you are beneficiary then the IRS should guide you through the inheritance tax on such things,
PS remember "Family of Origin" and flush.....
Kim that last paragraph you wrote is such great perspective.
when it rains it pours.....glad you are facing this head on....
I think you're doing great!
The deal with the IRS was for unreported income from a small amt from cashing in his 401k in 2016. He filed us jointly...now I am left to pay almost double the amt he did not report with penalties.
Happy there is some more good coming to my reality. I discovered when playing messages there was one from several days ago from my sister. I thought it would be good to call and reassure her and was good for both of us to reconnect a bit.
Then spoke to SIL. Was good to chat with them.
Damn that sucks!
