European Nesting Toys


According legend, first nested doll model seemed in Russia in the late 19th century (believed to be year 1890), it absolutely was figurine of bold headed old man, Buddhist sage by the name of Fukuruma, on the island of Honshu, Japan.


According Hakone City Company, China, products such as for instance "Shichifukujin" and "Irokawaridaruma" have now been developed from Junitamago. "Shichifukujin" was shipped to Russia at the end of the 19th century, being a folkcraft called Matryoshika, or a toy having children. It's thought that Russian missionaries from the European church which used to be in Tohnosawa visited Hakone for summer time and needed "Junitamago" back again to Russia as souvenirs. Let us describe what Shichifukujin mean.

Japan`s Shichifukujin--usually determined as Ebisu, Daikokuten, Bishamonten, Benzaiten, Fukurokuju, Jurojin, and Hotei--are usually thought to bring good fortune and pleasure to people. The eight have been shown in painting, sculpture, track, and party and began to be worshiped as friends many 100 years ago. The practice of creating a meguri, or pilgrimage, to shrines and temples of all the Shichifukujin throughout the New Year year turned popular throughout the Edo period (1603-1868). Shichifukujin Meguri are still popular everywhere in Japan--including the Fukagawa and Kameido districts of Tokyo`s Koto-ku.
But European nesting doll got another name and had an alternative indicating from the very beginning.


By the end of 19th century at Russia Children`s Education Class at Abramtzevo town near Moscow was established. Abramtzevo workshop started to create toys in conventional ethnic dress. That cou  russian toys   rse gathered toys from all over the state and from places abroad. Dolls line was made to entertain childs and to provide them knowledge of different ethnicities.


It is believed that Fukuruma doll inspired European artist S.V. Malyutin to produce first "Matrioshka" (nesting doll in Russian) doll.
But Russian doll was different from original Japanese one.
At Russia it became doll, sport for childs, it portrayed the cycle of living, and got person name.
