Pizza Around The World
Pizza has become an international phenomenon in that where you go in the world there will be pizza. Pizza was adapted to more cultures and restaurants compared to most other dishes around the world. When some local school children were asked where pizza originally came out, they believed it was out of the area in which they dwelt. And rightly so, because pizza was adapted to whatever area in the world you live. Barring that notion, pizza does have an intriguing history which starts in Greece, contrary to what many people probably think and that could be Italy.
There are conflicting tales revolving around the origin of pizza; one narrative is that the phrase 'Pizza' is derived from the Greek word Picea. Picea is an adjective that describes the black coating left on the bottom of dough by the burning ash which were used in ancient ovens. The first pizzas were likely baked in wood burning stoves and may well happen to be black on the floor in the ashes. Another story is that the Greek Flatbread was baked in an earthenware platter and was called piada. Whichever is correct, pizza did arise in Greece but not at the form we know it now. The Italians are accountable for the contemporary creation of pizza which would be the flatbread with a tomato topping, cheese and of course whatever else you would like to put on it.
When we were at Venice, Italy, the pizza that has been served to us was a private size and was very thin. It was not sliced since it was supposed to be wrapped up like a burrito and eaten that way. The reverse was true of pizza sold on the street carts and was not really pizza but foccacia that'd pizza toppings onto it. These were offered in small portions that could be consumed out of hand.
In Holland, we purchased an all pizza and contrary to how it's made in the United States, each segment had a different topping. We had been used to the 'everything' pizza which had everything scattered throughout so that everyone might have a taste of what. In this case, you could only have the toppings which were on the slices you picked.
When we had been In Japan, Pizza Hut sold a California Pizza that was a baked pizza shell topped with shredded lettuce and tomato. From what I know, the California Pizza that's sold now has a variety of seafood and fish like tuna, squid and shrimp and seaweed! If you get on the internet and search pizza in Japan you will see all kinds of interesting mixtures!
Pizza in the United States has obtained on all types and is yummy on all counts. At one time, the thick crusted pizza that required half an hour to bake was very popular. Thin crusted pizzas have taken their location and game all kinds of toppings. Let us start with the basic pizza and that will be just with a tomato topping, cheese and also probably pepperoni if you are so inclined. I like my pizza with plenty of vegetables such as bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and olives.
Popular styles of pizza are: Hawaiian, Mexican, Southwest Barbecued Chicken and one of my favorites, Chinese Barbecued Duck Pizza. The Hawaiian Pizza as featured in the majority of restaurants is created out of Canadian bacon (Portuguese Sausage would be similar to it) along with Pineapple alongside the cheese and tomato. Southwest BBQ Chicken Pizza has a topping much like BBQ Sauce along with the chicken, red bell peppers and red onions and maybe cilantro and of course cheese. Chinese BBQ Duck Pizza uses Hoisin sauce rather than tomatoes and will not have cheese, which isn't a common thing in the Chinese diet.
Together with flat pizzas there's calzone which got its name from the shape of the base of men's trousers in Naples, Italy during another century. Nowadays you can find pizza bagels, pizza dogs, stuffed pizza and on and on and on. Pizza is a close rival of the All-American Hamburger and may have surpassed the hamburger as everyone's favorite. Whichever you like your pizza, just like it and if you are in the mood, try different styles, just for the fun of it.
