Easter and more
My Dad's family never celebrated holidays or birthdays when I was a kid and I have no fond memories of holidays. I spent most of my childhood with my Mom's Mom, and every day was an ordeal, holiday, birthday or not.
My Dad's relatives never watched much television, especially never watched sports on TV. My Mom's relatives would travel halfway across the country for a visit and within a few minutes would, without asking, turn on the television to watch some game. When visiting my grandmother in the hospital during her last few days my Uncle was in a hurry to leave one day, before visiting hours was over. Turned out there was a game on.
If I visit someone in my Dad's family we won't have the television competing with us. It will be off, we will be visiting
There's only one bit of nostalgia I have about holidays. The day after holidays like Easter, Christmas, Halloween, etc., my Dad would go to the drug stores and places that normally put the candy out on tables to sell for half price and he would pretty much buy it all. They knew he was coming so they didn't have to put it out for sale, it would be in boxes ready for him. He would spend $600-$800-$1000 and then sell the candy to people playing cards or bingo in his club. He gave a tremendous amount of it away to charities for easter egg hunts or to the children's hospital. If you visited him and gave him a clue about what kind of candy you liked you couldn't leave without POUNDS of candy for you and your children.
We had my wife's birthday party yesterday because the week before was Easter weekend and she didn't want her party last weekend. Her Mom at 85 has developed an interest in sports and is one of those people that turns on the game when she visits. Yesterday she refused to turn off the golf and come to the dining room to sing "Happy Birthday" along with everyone else. The 800 pound gorilla can sit where she wants and do what she wants, but i thought it was tacky. Next visit the tv might be broken.
It's been a solid week with the fentanyl patch. It's awesome that something finally works for me.
