Dream Big or Go Home
There is a trick called lucid dreaming that just about every culture in history had as a "thing." I won't write much about how it works, since I would have to write a 12 page article and who has time for that?
But it's a way to take control of your dreams, and do whatever you want, instead of dreaming whatever random garbage your brain wants to dwell on while you're trying to sleep.
For those of use that have/had PTSD, dreams generally are nightmares that ruin any attempt to sleep. When I was in my early teens, I was getting two or three hours most nights with the occasional 12-18 hours where I had a dreamless coma like state when my exhaustion got too much.
I'm still convinced I'd have been 3 or 4 inches taller if I'd gotten more sleep back then.
I found out about lucid dreaming in a hippie book aimed at people wanting to be wizards, witches or warlocks. The early 1970s were weird, and I was reading anything i could find in libraries, yard sales, all those places we had to find ideas pre-internet.
I was desperate, so I found other books that mentioned how people did it, and I made it work. No more nightmares of being tortured, killed and worse. Instead I would wake up remembering I had been dreaming, decided to change the dream, and spent it as an invulnerable superhero, kicking ass like Batman or 007. (When I saw INCEPTION 30 years after i started lucid dreaming, I was PISSED that I hadn't written a screenplay. My dreams were a lot better.)
Even if you don't suffer from nightmares GET INTO THIS HOBBY. Every addiction, every trauma, every depression, every mental side effect from a chronic illness MAKES YOU FEEL OUT OF CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE.
Knowing that when you sleep, you're a virtual god able to change reality to suit you, you'll feel more in control even when you're awake. Trust me on this.
Hands up, who here wants to be able to shoot Freddy Krueger in the face?
