Dr. D-
Ok. so went to Dr. today. Counselor recommended an anti-depresant. I expected that, and after resisting for so long I am ready to try medication to get over this hurdle and get "me" back.. Dr. doesn't want to prescribe an anti-depresant. He did prescribe valium, morning and night, wants to see how that works, I go back in 3 weeks. Also changed my blood pressure med. Just ughhhhhh irritated and impatient now.

Valium is not an anti-depressant! It\'s and axiolytic. Grrrrr, that is frustrating! Perhaps you need to be more assertive with your Doc. You and your counselor know what you need better than your doc does!
Yeah, I know, I\'ve been wanting to switch docs,,have appt set up for mid jan with new one,,so we\'ll see. Dr D, bless his heart is old fam friend, he is um 87? or 89? He hugs me when I come in, so that was nice :) lol
Sometimes doctors are well-meaning but just aren\'t up on current practices and meds. A couple years ago we had to switch doctors (thanks, insurance company!!) and after my yearly physical he said my cholesterol was too high... I should stop eating burgers, french fries, and milk shakes... none of which I ever eat. lol
I have personally taken antidepressants for many years for anxiety, and finding a good doctor who will listen to you and take you seriously is a must. I hope this new one works out better for you.
I am also diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Dr prescribes Effexor XR and valium. They work well for me.
I was prescribed valium for the dual benefit of anxiety as well as muscle relaxant (slipped disc) and it kept me bombed out my mind so that I didn\'t feel anything but definitely did NOT bring ME back. Make an appointment with a real pdoc (psychiatrist) if you can - even if you do decide to go with your GP\'s plan.
Thanks allora, yeah i have the back and shoulder problems too so dr said will help with that too am only taking half pill in am and half at night,, just started yesterday so we\'ll see, but yeah I def want AD
Yeah, sounds like he is a dinosaur! They prescribed that valium years ago, when not too many others were around. Plus, easier to get hooked on that, versus some anti-depressants, which are way safer! And if you choose, to get off of them, and wean yourself, no problem at all!
