dr appt

Before I got to see the dr, this pretty young lady came into the exam room to take off the bandages.  I almost past out from the sight of the wound.  Seems like I was much more mentally stronger when I was in a state of fear, at the time the accident happened, then I was today, looking at the healing wound with the swelling and the stitches and a metal pin sticking out the top of my  thumb which was holding the two bones together so they could heal.
Because of the damage to the joint, I may have to have the two bones fused together. Still uncertain as to weather I will be able to hold a guitar pick again or not. As long as I don't need to bend my thumb, I might be alright.  At least I will still have a thumb and get some use out of it!
I had some feeling on parts of my thumb where he thought I wouldn't have feeling so that was good! But I may need some additional nerve surgery in the future. Stitches come out next week.  Pin comes out in 6 weeks and that will require surgery in which they will put me under.
I may also lose the nail because a good portion of where the nail forms was damaged.
There is alot, still up in the air. All depends on how it heals.  Dr was very concerned about infection due to the bone being exposed. So have to remember to take my huge antibiotic pills.
I wish people were like starfish or like lobsters, lose an arm or a finger and a new one grows back to replace it!

This is a tough injury, but it could have been a whole lot worse! Thank your lucky stars, my friend. Also, if you have some feeling there, it may continue to improve as nerves often regenerate even after a severe trauma. Keep thinking positive thoughts, as I believe this has a lot of bearing on the speed and efficiency of the body\'s healing powers.

Question, how are you handling the pain with out narcotics. This is one of my worries about quitting and possibly needing pain meds. in the future for serious issues such as this. I hope you are healing quickly and can get back to your guitar soon...even if you have to retrain yourself to play it with your feet! haha Remember the drummer that retrained to drum with one hand only after losing an arm? Def Leppard I think! : ) Good luck with it all!
