Many parents of young children seem to be convinced that their little ones cannot play on their own or that they need adult supervision or assistance for their playtimes. However it is as far from the truth as it can be. It is not only a false assumption but one that can have disastrous effects on the child’s mental and psychological development. While toddlers need parental care and affection, they don’t need constant supervision or interference, especially for their playing routines. It is natural to become concerned about safety while leaving your kids alone on playground structures, but it is important to remember that modular playground equipment is their first direct interaction with the outside world and they need to be in authority to deal with it according to their own will.

Playtime Dependency Can Have Expansive Effect

If the parents make it a point to be there for their children to be able to play, it can make the child become increasingly dependent on parents. Furthermore, since playtime does not need any particular mental work, if the child grows accustomed to be cared for even for that light an activity, he will inevitably expect someone’s assistance or company for almost all the activities. It means that the child can develop neediness, extreme emotional attachment and drastic lack of confidence. It can also make them become too social or too excluded depending on the nature of their activities as they grow up.

Independence Means Encouragement

The point to remember is that a child learns everything from his environment. If he is brought up in a milieu of encouragement and confidence, he will definitely follow suit and gain confidence and self-assuredness. Likewise is he is always under supervision and constant company even in playtimes, he will become dependent on others even to play. The root of the problem is when parents confuse care with need. It is natural for parents to play with their little ones and it is also healthy, but like everything else moderation is the key here too.

Finding Ways To Entertainment Encourages Initiative Taking

Allow your toddlers to find activities to keep themselves entertained. Watch them come up with games or fun things on their own. Sometimes parents believe that they are responsible for entertaining their child and keep him from getting bored. However, in actuality it is the kids’ job to find their interests and pursue them. Furthermore, if parents are always steering their children towards what they think interests their child, it will also hamper the child’s ability to experiment with new things.

At such a young age even children might not be able to appreciate the independence and they might resist a little to play alone, but it is just like the first day of school. Parents are emotional for their children so there is always a tendency to become over protective or read more than there is. If your child says he doesn’t want you to leave when he plays, then you should keep him company but allow him to do play with his toys or colors on his own. Eventually you can start making him independent for his playtime.

Another important thing to note here is that feeling of authority in playtime is one of the major factors that allow the children to grow up to be decisive and confident of their thoughts. Every teaching begins early in life and parents need to make sure that in their affection and caring they are not making their little ones dependent, even on themselves.
