Domestic Violence
I wish my beloved felt more comfortable speaking of the domestic violence between his parents. I wish. Should I be careful what I wish for?
I know for sure that my father-in-law has had two eye surgeries inflicted during attacks from my mother-in-law. For sure my feeling goaded to violence provided the main impetus to evoking the separation phase of our marriage.
My father-in-law had sense enough to marry a college educated dairy maid. My husband married a combat-trained alley cat. If I let myself be goaded to eye-gouging, they probably won't bother with the surgery to separate my beloved's eyes from his grey matter. The most important part of combat training is how and when to walk away from a fight. That part of my training held for most of this phase of our marriage. Distance became imperative when I started abusing the sheet rock on a regular basis. This was in the late 80's.
It is also when I gave up on holidays. Not a real dramatic sacrifice in my book. Traditions are not my strong suit. I use them when convenient and leave them in the closet when convenient. To everything there is a season.
My sons have loved having my in-laws in charge of all holidays. It is a crisis that the in-laws can no longer handle it. They are 80 something.
My husband and I still cannot talk about it. He follows orders. I stay out of it. It has worked since the late 80's.
