Doctor Frustrations

I go to see my doctor for help and advice, medically speaking, and at times he is also a very good listener. He knows I have other issues besides my liver disease (OCD and Bipolar) and though he isn't overly warm, even his taking a moment or two to listen and suggest things is helpful.  On Tuesday I had my follow-up appointment just to have things checked in general and I had a few issues that I wanted to bring up.  I have psoriasis and eczema (the eczema is mostly on my hands and is actually painful at times) and so I wanted to just ask my doctor is there was anything else he could suggest since the cream he gave me last year doens't help at all, even though it helps on my psoriasis that is on other areas of my body.  You would've thought I was asking for a million dollars.  He went off on this tangent about how he never in his 40 years as a doctor heard of this medication not working for anyone and on and on and how he would just refer me to a dermatologist because obviously I must be special. I told him I wasn't saying he was wrong but it just wasnt' working and I didn't know what else to do. I told him it burns and itches and it's also embarrassing and I can't wash my hands out in public due to the soap and can't use sanitizer because there' s so much alcohol in it that it makes my skin burn even more.  He said, "well, gee, if this is the worst thing you have going for you then you're doing better than most".  As a matter of fact, it' s not the worst thing.  I never complain about my weight because he tells me to cut down to under 1,000 calories a day and exercise more (I go to the gym 5-6 days a week now), and I never complain about how my back hurts and I never complain about how I am also so depressed that I cry every single day and can't take anything for that and even that I can't take anything for a simple headache.  But I am thankful for my health nonetheless.  I was so upset I didn't even ask my 2nd question, which was what, if anything, I can take for cramps during "that time" because God forbid I might be in pain then too.  I simply said I'd wait to see if a referral for dermatology came thru and took my check out papers and left.  And then I got in my car and cried and ended up crying all day long. He made me feel like a piece of crap, like all I did was complain and burden people and like I was worthless.  Maybe I overreacted but really, I don't think so.
I've been back and forth with myself since then about this and have decided not to change doctors just yet because maybe he was having a bad day (but even so he shouldn't have taken it out on me) but my mom and dad were not happy and my husband seemed a bit taken aback by the attitude.  Anyway, I just had to get that out.  Now I feel like I can't say anything anymore to make people think I'm not thankful for what I do have because one little complaint makes me seem ungrateful.  And in the meantime, while I wait to see if I can see a dermatologist, I have to keep trying to take care of my itchy eczema on my own.
Take care and God bless,
ca
