Disturbing/Sobering Call from RE Tonight

First off, let me apologize for all the journals I've been writing the past few days. I'm not sure how to deal with this early pregnancy roller coaster without journaling and getting the reassurance of my DS sisters. So yesterday when I found out my beta number, I was a little disappointed it wasn't higher and without even thinking, I immediately contacted my RE's office back and asked if the number not doubling was worrisome (even though when they originally told me they said it was rising slow, but in a "normal range"). Of course being the anxious mess I have been, I had to go and stir the pot. I never heard back from them and I figured, just as well, I'll just keep my appt next Tuesday, try and enjoy this pregnancy and if the doctors aren't worried, then I won't worry. Well, at the end of the day today, I get a call from a nurse at my REs office apologizing for not getting back to me sooner but that I can come in for another beta on Friday if it would make me feel better. I asked if she thought it was necessary, or if they were just offering this since I was worried. She said that is what the doctor told her to say and that I have a 60% right now of this working out. WTF!?!? So now I start to freak out a bit and I was like, huh, I don't understand what you are saying, what is a 60% chance!? So then she says hold on and puts my RE on the phone, where this conversation goes from bad to worse. I wasn't happy with what I heard. My RE basically said I had a 23% chance of getting pregnant and that they get a lot of women my age pregnant but most don't result in a live birth, only 5%. This shocked me as I thought I had a 5% chance of getting pregnant NOT having a live birth! Then she tells me I have a 40% chance of miscarrying and that most likely if so, it will happen between now and 10 weeks. She also told me that this pregnancy will result in one of three things: miscarriage, ectopic, or a live birth. She also said, even if I get past all this, there is still a high chance of abnormalities with my age. She said not to get caught up in beta numbers, since they are only an indication and really the moment of truth is when they do ultrasounds and if they can hear a heartbeat. My RE really talked in stats, and was really lacking in bedside manner, not to mention english isn't her first language so I can't help but think this came across worse than it should have. She did say that it was great I got pregnant and to stay positive (um, yeah, after all that?!) She also said at this point, there is no reason to worry other than the stats, etc. and left it up to me to come in before Tuesday if I want. I thought about it, and decided I am just going to wait until Tuesday. I want to enjoy being pregnant, if for only another week and in my gut I feel ok and that I should just wait. I don't think panicking and needing constant reassurance is going to change this outcome. I feel sorta disheartened from this conversation, but I also see how in a way I brought this on by asking them if all was ok when they told me it was. Lesson learned. Being anxious and pushing the envelope when its unnecessary doesn't always bring positive results. I knew my odds going into this, and this is where I am for better of for worse, and I just have to hope and pray all goes smooth. I had a 2% chance of developing a liver tumor from the BCP and I did, so hey, maybe I will once again fall into the slimmest of odds and be in the 5% of my age that do IVF resulting in a healthy, live birth. Anyway, thanks for reading this and for getting me through another day. Love to all xoxo

Good grief what a call!! I hate listening to the blah, blah or stats and numbers from doctors. I love that you said I am going to enjoy every moment of being pregnant! That\'s what you should do!! I googled pregnancy miracles from IVF and it made me smile to see SOOO many women beat the odds! God has the final say NOT the doctors. Try to find peace and let that baby grow. Worrying won\'t change anything so why not enjoy exactly where you are in this moment PREGNANT!! BIG HUGS!

I\'m staying positive for you that this is all going to work out. I too over analyze the shit out of everything and make myself crazy. When we look at stats, they often suck but we know ladies here on DS who have gone on to successful pregnancies. Hang in there! Xo

Ok I seriously hate your clinic. Can\'t they just keep their mouths shut! A 5% live birth rate doesn\'t make sense when you have a 60% chance of not miscarrying. Lets focus on the positive, the glass is over half full, you have a rising beta, no cramping and no bleeding. You are pregnant and fingers crossed you are staying this way.

First don\'t appologize for the journals. That\'s what they are for. I think I was writing everyday when I was in your shoes. It\'s so hard to get through all this. I understand why you are upset about the phone call but you have to try to forget about it. I think it\'s good that you didn\'t move up your beta. In the end, it is what it is. You are doing all you can and nothing will change the outcome. You have no reason to believe you will miscarry. Like Alana said, all looks good. Try to focus on that. You beat the odds getting pregnant and you will beat them again once you hold that baby in your arms.
Stay strong. Big hugs.

I am still rooting for you. I don\'t care what the stats say. As far as i\'m concerned, you already beat the odds being where you are. I am loving your decision to wait it out, and enjoy what you can. If our journey has taught us anything, it is to enjoy the moments we are given! you got this girl!

Enjoy your time now and don\'t worry about anything. She did give you the stats (I found them online when I got pregnant in March). For our age, the stats are not good but it doesn\'t mean you will be one of them.

She is right, the betas don\'t really say anything it is the u/s that tells the truth. Relax and enjoy the weekend. You are pregnant!

I hope you\'re a \"statistical fluke\" like me! I\'m sure all is well and while numbers can sound scary don\'t let it upset you too much. I think with IVF we sometimes know \"too much\" and it keeps us from just relaxing and enjoying things. Most my friends don\'t even know what a beta is. Geeez.. Wouldn\'t that be nice!!! Journal away .. We\'re here for you.

I wish there was a like button option on here because I second everything all your girls have already stated on here. Don\'t apologize for your journal entries! That option is here for you to spill your guts about anything and everything and those of us that are connected to you are privileged and honored to be able to see your journey and have you share it with us. Journaling is a complete judge free zone. *HUG! I am hoping and praying that you are in the perfect 5% group or as MightyMel says a \"Statistical fluke\" I am thinking and hoping for sticky baby thoughts for the next 40 weeks for you friend.

Oh goodness! I am sorry you are worried, but I agree with above all signs are pointing to a wonderful miracle and statistics don\'t help anything!

I know it\'s difficult but I agree you have to stay positive. I believe statistics are just numbers. And anyone has the chance or ability to beat the odds. So why not you?! I am keeping the faith that all will work out :) Hugs!

What a phone call! I personally think they should have kept their mouths shut other than saying your numbers are going up, that\'s a good thing and we will see next week on your u/s how things are progressing. Ugh. I like your attitude though. Enjoy this time being pregnant! Sending you lots of good vibes! XOXO

I\'m praying you are one of the 5% that makes it, you are pregnant now so try to enjoy it! Easier said than done, I know! I am appalled at your RE and how she handled the situation. My RE is also foreign and at times hard to understand so that is why I often just talk to my nurses and leave it at that. Enjoy your weekend, try to just let go until Tuesday. I will keep praying this is the one for you!!!! xo
