Developing Your Blog Name
You've made a well-considered decision to start and maintain a business blog because it meets your business goals. You have a monster list of content ideas, and do well at maintaining your publication schedule. You've avoided the major blogging mistakes. So where's your visitors? Why is not everyone flocking to ooh and aah over your beautiful new baby?
To put it differently, do not write. Don't write at all. Don't send out relevant, valuable content. Don't post. And your small local weekly business blog will die a slow, sad, miserable death while causing all sorts of additional collateral damage to your brand with its death throes.
Write like you're a person talking with other men and women. It is OK to discuss some of your life and what goes on day-to-day on your company with your audience. Corporate speak and formal press releases have a goal. But in your blog they're boring.
Thinking of what to write. Somewhere along the line you're likely to run into writer's block. Do a quick Google search on what others are writing about in your area. Set up a Google alert on your major keywords and have those alerts automatically go into a folder in Outlook. Then when you are stuck, look at the folder and online marketing strategies you'll have a wealth of new ideas.
Beginning a may be the worst path you will take in your organization. Why? Because many times over small business owners think that their blog will promote their company.
However, the caveat to this statement is that small business coaching experts agree that running a blog is fantastic ONLY if it is done correctly. Otherwise, you would be much better off not wasting time and energy building a site from scratch! This is because unless your site actually answers a need, it will not bring in traffic, and with no traffic, you might as well be totally nonexistent in the internet world!
Is the initial paragraph of your articles hook the reader and luring them down the article, is it forcing the urge to read more? If it's not then you need to tweak it and fix it before it does, and that's the great thing about business blogging - it's not set in tone. You can tweak it until it does what it's supposed to do - hook your reader in.
A business blog is an investment, but it pays in industry goodwill, terrific information, and high traffic from potential customers. Composing it can feel like a chore, but it's a fun way to stand up on your soapbox and show people what you really think. And in a tough economy, it is sometimes only a great way to keep busy!
