Deserving?
A DS friend wrote a journal entry the other day about how thankful we should be when we experience love. That love is an undeniable energy that cannot be ignored. We need to recognize the value of love. I of course replied with a pessimistic response to this journal. I said: “Everyone needs to be loved but the older we get we must prove to others that we are deserving, by giving back the same kind of love we expect in return. This is what makes the world go round. So, you are in a good place. It sounds like you have much to give and are willing to share”. She then replied back summing up that we are born to love, we all deserve love, and do not have to prove anything. Her statement opened my eyes to the realization that I perceive “love” as a selfish possession which needs to be eared, not an altruistic act that comes naturally. My world has really altered and distorted the true definition of what I so seek for. Perhaps it is because I am on the defensive side of it all. The hurt has harden me and made me bitter. The struggle seems like love should be a chore and something unattainable. I look too hard for the complicated side to things when love is actually the simplest action that one can demonstrate to others. It is powerful and extraordinary and everyone deserves it, no matter how many mistakes or stumbles they have gone through in life.
I am grateful for my DS friend for introducing me to the simplicity of what we all are innately born to do and receive, without string attached.

I think the love is the same you have for your children. It is not earned but simply is a natural part of being human. The real love that we value so highly I think is simply a natural part of who we are and over time as we learn to recognize this and develop it we can become more comfortable in simply expressing it as it is - in friendships and also in learning to give ourselves good care by learning to love ourselves. The love my husband and I shared still to this day fills me up with wonderful, loving feelings. I could not survive without it as it is my strength to face the challenges of coping with such illness and disability in a society that leaves me in such a state of crisis. It is that love that gives me life as I try to survive such overwhelming circumstances. I hope that we all develop the freedom to let love guide us in all that we do in life. Society truly needs that now more than ever with so much that is anything but loving around us.
