Days of Foxy

I've been seeing ads for doggy wading pools in the newspaper and circulars in the mail and it brought back memories of my early days with Foxy.  We chose each other at a no-kill shelter called "Fuzzy Friends".  As I was filling out the adoption papers, one of the ladies said she hopped I was ready for an active dog.  I put Foxy in the front seat of the car where she promptly fell asleep.  She made a slow tour of her new back yard where she would spend a lot of time since she was to be an "outside" dog as I worked 12 hour shifts.  I took her into the house where she had full reign and she checked every room.  It was a bit cold and after her tour, she jumped in my lap and went to sleep.  Some active dog!  After her 45 minute nap, all hell broke loose!  She jumped off my lap and bounced all over the place, going through all the rooms again.  After she got tired, she curled up at my feet on the floor and fell asleep.  That was the beginning of the most beautiful relationship I've ever had with a dog.  She followed me everywhere and learned my habits and adapted.  When summer came, I bought her a kiddee pool so she'd have water and a place to cool off.  She was always at the gate when I got home regardless of the hour and shared my home time with me.  She slept in my bed, loving getting under the covers on cold nights.  There was a joke that she slept closer to me than my ex-wife did.  When some pit bulls moved in behind us, she became an "inside" dog and has remained so.  She's been through a lot with me, living in a very cold house when the gas was turned off and times of being in a kennel when I had my bouts with mrsa, listening to my screams of pain.  We're getting old together.  She knows more about me than I do her.  We love each other and I don't think I could live without her.  I thank God every day that we got together.

No matter what kind of animal we choose to share our lives with, there is a profound peace just knowing that they share our love unconditionally. Of course, if you choose to cure up with a snake or lizard, that could be a different story. Hugs and kisses, Deb :o)
