Day 4 after Surgery

I'm feeling 'okay' today. The surgical site still looks good, no real swelling, bruising is almost non existent, and the sore throat I had felt is practically almost gone. The weirdest feeling I think is feeling like there is so much more space in my throat now. It could be all mental or psychological. When I take a drink or swallow food, it feels like, it just goes down... versus how before I had the surgery, I always felt like something was stuck and my liquids were going thru a straw. It also feels like I can take deep breaths easier and I feel like I can breathe better. It's something I welcome although it's a strange feeling especially since I spent the last year sleeping in an almost sitting position and eating soft foods or blended foods. I thought I'd be more tired as my surgeon said I would be hypo after surgery and extremely tired but I actually feel more energized. I have turning and twisting my neck since the day of surgery as my surgeon advised and it almost feels normal. There's a little bit of tightness that I can feel at the site of the surgery site but other than that.... it feels normal. I have yet to extend my neck up as I'm afraid of loosening the stitch and the wound opening up. Overall, I am happy with the physical results so far. I knew that there was no such thing as a quick fix with surgery or RAI.... so I know the journey ahead requires "patience". I plan to go to my daughter's first soccer game this Saturday and plan to go shopping with my mother on Sunday... so I'll keep ya posted on how I make out. My only compaint right now is this cough I can't shake. My surgeon said to be sure to cough frequently to prevent pneumonia so I made myself cough every hour or so the first 2 days... yesterday, I coughed when I felt the need and today it just seems like my throat is so scratchy and I can't stop coughing... Go figure. Hopefully, it passes sooner than later. I will be posting pictures this weekend from the thyroidectomy (before and after pics).

You might want to try a little honey for your throat. It will help with any inflammation. Once you start to cough, you can irritate the throat and it just causes you to cough more - besides, it tastes good!

It is definitely a strange feeling to be able to breathe easier, it almost feels as though you are immediately filling your lungs with air - something I didn\'t feel while I had the goiter. It sounds as though you are recovering nicely. Take it easy now and you will on your way to a new you in no time.
