Day 2 of 5K training: 3 miles

Still have some work to do... I ran late night tonight because I had work all day and I also had a dinner date with girlfriends (which I'd made before I knew I would be so busy today!).
I ran downhill and and then a flat course for 1.58 miles, which meant of course that coming back, there would be a flat course and then a vicious uphill!
I took Maggie with me, and she was a dream to run with. During the last two blocks of uphill, I actually let go of the leash and she just ran by my side as I huffed and puffed up the hill. Right now, I'm looking down and she is completely passed out on the carpet.
My time was quite good going out - I couldn't find my stopwatch but I started at 9:57pm. When I got to the turnaround, my phone said 10:13. I had stopped a couple blocks back to puff my inhaler and also to wait while Maggie went to the bathroom, so I think I averaged around a 10 minute mile coming out. Going back I went a bit slower, and it was 10:29pm when I arrived at home. I wasn't disappointed since that hill really was very hard.
I'm going to try to do at least some of yesterday's strength workout in intervals as I work on some things. Tomorrow, my training plan says to run 5 x 400s at my goal pace, which is 8:30. That comes out to about 2 minutes and 7 seconds per 400, as ultratodd pointed out. I was never very good with speed, as I mentioned before, so these will probably be tough for me, but I will try to hit my targets as best I can. I will walk down the same route I did tonight, and use the straightaways to do my 400s.

I WALKED SIX MILES WITH THE MLK MARCH ON MONDAY. AT 62, DO NOT HAVE MEDICAL CLEARANCE TO JUMP INTO RUNNING. HONOR TO YOUR YOUTH AND VIGOR! NEVER LET WORK GET IN THE WAY OF TAKING GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF!

Great job Jessica! That sounds like a tough run, especially with the uphill being the second half! It is always fun to run with a dog, and I am so glad yours is a good running pal! :) Keep on rocking it! You are off to a great start!

If I can make a suggestion... I will say try to not overthink the training. That sounds so cliche, but this traning should be fun! Speedwork and intervals are important for gaining strength and speed, but if you dissect it too much and make it too technical, it might take the fun out of it. It is three miles, and I am confident that you are going to rock it. I guess my point is don\'t overthink each workout, and have some that are not interval/speed based. Just make sure to have fun! :)

Thanks for the suggestion smileLisa! I will certainly try to focus on the fun.

It\'s hard to be too lax about it - I know what you mean by not overthinking it... I did that for all my previous training because I was more focused on distance than speed.

But this is something I feel like I need to be disciplined about (something I\'ve been lacking lately also :). I have my relax days and rest days, but on the days that I have to reach certain speed goals to make progress, I am going to try to be my own boot camp sergeant :)

Thanks for the encouragement!!!
