Dan living on the Street of New York City
Well, we live in the western Suburbs of Chicago, and as my previous post said he stayed to live in the streets in New York city. (No money etc) We spent well over $2,000 flying back and forth to convince him to come home.
Finally he agreed. He has a warrant for his arrest in Cook County. (Caught using) Dan has never been violent in his whole life. He very laid back and intelligent.
Again, that was easily avoidable as the jail sentence was dropped in favor of him just showing up in court in the suburbs which he failed to do. (Unbelievable, didn't even try to call to make an excuse)
Anyway, we said he could come home and stay 2 weeks if he would either give himself up or went for treatment in Wisconsin. He finally agreed that he would go to jail. (Hey, I'd choose rehab over Cook County in a heartbeat.)
Anyway, that point is mute since on the second day home, I found a heroin needle on the kitchen floor and him stumbling around the house after work. I have no idea where he got the money either. So, I told him to either go to jail, or rehab. He wants neither, and is going back to live on the street in New York.
Now, I know what a lot of you might said or be thinking. Call the cops and have him arrest and safe, but do you know how many times we did that, to no avail???
I am hoping this Peter Pan atitude of Urban Camping leaves his head. I told him so many times that his thinking of life in general is based on his thoughts and his thoughts are not clear, but to him life appears as he pictures it, so that's his reality. So, he see life from his own mind so how could he be wrong???
I talked to him about changing the inside changes the outside. What we think, see, and feel depend greatly on our atitude and our perception of things. Of course we have to do positive things and keep busy to keep our mind functioning properly.
I also told him, if you are not getting the results you want in life then change the input. If the results are bad everytime out, it's only cause you keep repeating the same old bad behaviors, thoughts and actions. Be good to yourself. No matter how hard you try Digging for gold in the same spot over and over will not help you get the gold. Trying digging in another spot. Change to succeed!
And, well, you know. I just keep trying to reach him as all of us have try, but it's like talking to a brick wall. There is no sin in failure. The sin is coming up with the same bad results over and over and faling to see you need to change in order to succeed. The possiblities are endless, but our minds put up restrictions based on how we view life and ourselves. Oh well!

My heart goes out to you. At least you know that you have done the best that you could do. You\'re in my prayers.
Jack, you have done and tried everything the best that you could. You have always gone above and beyond for your son, like all us parents of addicts have. You would think living on the streets homeless would make an addict hit their bottom, but sometimes that isn\'t enough. I truly feel that Dan will eventually hit his bottom and seek the help he needs. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Remember anytime you need to talk, you can call me.
