CRISPR CUREs: Running with Molecular Scissors in the Classroom

Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) is a family of DNA sequences in prokaryotes. It is one of the defense mechanism in prokaryotes, these sequences contains snippets of DNA are formed due to infection of viruses in bacteria and are used by the prokaryote to detect and destroy DNA from similar viruses during subsequent attacks and form the basis of a technology known as CRISPR/Cas9 that effectively and specifically changes genes within organisms.


 


During a CURE, students use basic science practices to complete novel, relevant, collaborative research, which the student is required to present in some form at the end of the course. This creates a learning experience that does not only impart knowledge, but also teaches students important scientific skills like asking impactful questions, forming hypotheses, gathering and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions from their work.
