Crazy days

For as far away as we were from Hurricane Sandy (midwest) ~ it affected our area more than anyone anticipated. Compared to what happened on the east coast - what we experienced was nothing but it was big here. 85% of our town was without power for nearly a week. Trees, power lines, lots of property damage. We, thankfully, didn't lose power, only cable, 40 ft. pine trees, a 30 ft. evergreen type of tree/brush, and another rather large bush.  We also lost our cemented in basketball pole/hoop. The pole is so heavy it cannot be manually lifted.  I think the entire pole is filled with cement. Can't believe the wind did that.
In the midst of all this I've been trying to advertise our community forum that's tonight!  Fortunately, we thought to pull most of the yard signs before the storm hit. Miraculously ~ the ones we left stayed put!  I cannot believe that one. In the past when we posted them for our parent programs ~ the slightest breeze would sweep them away!  So that was a surprise. The flyers, however, that cost us a pretty penny weren't distributed as I had hope because of the storm. So my husband and I went out last night hit stores - asking them to place them on their counters or hand them out. Trying...
Then last week Saturday - when we spent all day working on the clean up in our yard ~ I had been trying to get a hold of our oldest son, S.  He lives 2 1/2 hours away and normally answers his cell rather quickly. I sent him photos of the trees and the different stages they were going through as my husband chain sawed them down and the cleaned up branches around them. No answer. Found out on Sunday night. Our son ~ the one who never gave us a difficult time in his life - easy, easy kid. Eagle Scout before high school. Honor student. President of this or that in student activities. Involved in church youth groups and leader beyond college. Well - he ended up getting an  OVI - DUI - DWI (whatever the acronym one likes to use). Yes - unlike our other two boys - he's never had an alcohol related incident. He doesn't have the problem like his younger brothers but he is the one that's been caught. I kept thinking it was a matter of time before our middle guy got pulled over because he is an alcoholic but never expected this one. A hard lesson. 
The community forum on youth alcohol and other drug use is tonight. Hoping for a great turnout but have no expectations. Been there before with other programs and disappointed. Not this time. Even thought the high school soccer boys' playoff game was scheduled for tonight and pull a lot of people away from it - I'm not going to fuss. Tried my best and pray that this event will help someone.
