Counseling Update

Tired and should have been in bed an hour ago, but I wanted to write this while I was thinking of it.
Family counseling is going so well, IMO.  Huz doesn't think so.  He gets so fragile and frustrated and he HATES it.  I feel so bad for him, but the kids and I are actually getting so much out of it.  I hate that counseling makes him feel like a failure instead of seeing the opportunities to grow better/stronger/more effective.
I adore the counselor.  I really do.  She is so good at keeping things mellow and calm and for keeping the conversation on track.  Our son is so ... ugh.  Teenage-volatile mixed with his OWN brand of volatile.  And Huz gets SO mad so easily and builds up defense walls of apathy that are frustrating and ineffective.  And my daughter?  She just cried and cried the whole session because she's so sensitive.  She wouldn't even really talk until AFTER, when I walked with her around the block to let her calm down and pull herself together.Yet?
Afterward, it was like... ugh, forgive the comparison, but... it was as if a huge and painful zit had been popped.  It was still a little sore, but purging all the icky felt SO much better.  Even though we're fairly broke (ugh... ) I decided to splurge and took everyone out to Starbucks afterward.  We sat and had drinks and chatted like a "normal" (hahah whatever THAT means) family, and it felt so blessedly RIGHT.  Huz was still hugging tight to his shielding walls, but I think even he was softening up some seeing the two kids animated and ... I dunno.  Lighter.  It just felt better.
It gives me hope.  Makes me feel like it was the right decision to take the whole family instead of just sending our son, which is what we initially considered.  The issue isn't so much our son, as much as how we all react to/interact with each other.  The counselor said it best - once we can see that there is not just one straight path that we HAVE to head down, any number of opportunities will open up.
I look forward to it.
