Contributions from the Challenged

After having lunch with one of my oldest and best friends, on the short drive home, I began to think back to when he was first diagnosed with melanoma. The spot was so small, and was readily disposed of in what we all thought was a very early discovery, and permanent fix. His son being born, being honored to be his Godfather and Sharry his Godmother. Ten years later, a re-emergence of this demon. This time spreading to the bone, and now his liver. During lunch we had talked about our wild, and somewhat dangerous youthful indiscretions, and the thousands of laughs along the way to relative maturity. Neither of us would ever want it to be more than relative. During our conversation, he said "I told my wife yesterday that she was the best thing that ever happened to me. I told him that was great, but she already knew. We all told her that years ago. More laughs, through misty eyes. As I took the long way home, I thought of how my friend and his wife met.  Sharry and I had started Matt in a home based therapy program for autistic children. His wife then working on her teaching degree, was working as a therapist in the program. My friendmet her at our house one day, and they were on their way. Almost simultaneously, one of my other very close friends, who had been divorced awhile, met another of Matt's therapists...They now have a beautiful daughter, also our Godchild. Wham! Two marriages(who needs dating sites, just stop by our house) compliments of our son. As I smiled at the thought of Matt's accomplishment, I remembered when a well intentioned, yet endearingly blunt relative once said to me, as he expressed his concern over Matt's lifelong disability."Why does God do this to people, what will Matt ever be able to accomplish in his life in his condition?" He meant no harm in his remark, I actually thought about it more as the severity of his challenges became apparent. I just told him at the time, that we'll just love him, and trust in God. I realized later, that his question had been answered. Only by way of Matt's challenges, did two marriages come to pass, and two children come into this world. Had Matt been a "normal " child, none of this would have occurred. In addition, all of the people along the way that he has brought joy and laughter to. The way he has taught so many people what is important in life, the power of innocence, and unconditional love. The same is true for all those, like my son, that have purposes both seen, and hidden from view. Quite some contributions, from such challenged lives.

Oh Robert I am so sorry I just read your Journal, I didn\'t know when I sent my last post. I am sorry that your dear friend has that terrible beast we call Cancer and I will pray for him and his family and you and Matt. It seems that when we think we are making progress something else moves in, we are not suppose to know what all this is about until it is our time to go to Heaven and face God and hopefully get our questions answered but it makes things like this really hard to comprehend. Take care my dear friend and hug that little ( or I should say big ) match maker long and tight, he is a gift that not all know.

Your last post took me into Casey\'s world, and what a beautiful place that is.Thank you for the support of my friend. He is , in his own words,\"one stubborn s.o.b.\", so we will take it one treatment at a time, fight, and pray. I\'ve seen however, with my brother and then his son, how the story eventually goes.We have to live for those still here, and make those that watch us from above, proud. There is still so much we have to give. My post is just as true of Casey.Think of all the people she has brought joy and inspiration to, and continues to. They are the teachers of life\'s most important lessons. We learn what real love is from them.
Love to my 3 favorite Gophers, stay warm and safe; Robert

Stay Warm! THEY CLOSED THE MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS AGAIN!, that makes 5 days so far for the cold weather, When I was in school they never closed and we didn\'t have buses then, we walked, 1 1/2 miles jr. high and 10 blocks senior high, although my Mom and Dad wouldn\'t have us go if we thought it was too cold, but I liked school so I always wanted to go, Dad would sometimes be able to drive us if he could before work. I think Tuesday will be closed too, looks like the same - wind chill in the minus 40\'s, Kyle is lovin this big time. I hope you guys aren\'t getting that bad or you probably get it after we do hey. I would just like a good old fashion snow storm instead of this cold! ;(
Casey and Matt show many things to many people including us that we would never see if it weren\'t for them, it is their love and innocence that makes their world so much better than ours. I will continue to pray for your friend and family and you and Matt. You stay warm too my friend ;)
Peace and Love Robert
