Confused About Google's List, Url Dampening, & No. of Links?
I recently received still another 'please help' e-mail from a lady called Ian who runs an experience company in Tanzania (http://www.betheladventure.co.uk ). Should you require to discover further on this page is not affiliated, there are many resources you should consider pursuing. Ian was worried about the effect of a variety of issues including indexing and url dampening, and was desperate for help. However, he'd read some fairly misleading articles before, so he had a somewhat confused knowledge of the facets at play. Because I suppose he is perhaps not alone in his frustration and concern, I made a decision to publish the details of our discussion.
Ian's e-mail contains many issues. I've listed each individually below, accompanied by my reaction.
Q: When I look for the amount of backlinks to my website using 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', I see only 23 results. It appears that only 23 of our backlinks have survived Google's dampening link filter. Will there be a time delay before they are attributed to your site? '
A: Firstly, I do believe you could have the dampening link filter only a little confused. According to the dampening link filter idea, your links are located and recognized by Google, you just don't obtain the full benefit from them until confirmed period of time has elapsed. The dampening url filter (if it exists) doesn't stop links from appearing in Google's benefits when you look for them. (The only reason your backlinks mightn't can be found in a Google search is if Google hasn't yet found the pages containing the links.) Also, don't worry too much about such things as the dampening link filter. In the first place, it is far from proven / accepted fact. Many well regarded SEO experts don't have confidence in it at all. More over, even though it does exist, it only affects those firms with all the budget to create the large numbers (hundreds or thousands possibly) of links reputedly necessary to induce it. That's no problem, if your amount of backlinks suddenly increases by 20.
And subsequently, don't feel every thing Google tells you. By trying to find 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', you generally speaking only view a small proportion of real links to your website. The easiest way to search for links will be to search for just the URL 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk', then on-the page that shows next, select 'Find web-pages that include the definition of 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk' .' Once you do it this way, you'll see all of the pages that contain your URL. Generally, the URL is likely to be an energetic link (or at least it should be, and you should ask them to make it so). If you try this search, you'll see that your website has about 169 links, perhaps not 23.
Q: Still another question is approximately listed pages (using site:www.betheladventure.co.uk). I am aware this can be a report of pages which were changed. I'd 3-2, it went down to 28 and it is down to 26 now this morning. Do they only keep the pages for monthly or can there be more towards the pages than I realized?
A: The number of indexed pages is just the number of pages in your site that Google 'knows about.' Theoretically, the only real time the age of a page is necessary is when the page is also young*, i.e. Google spiders haven't visited it yet, or Google hasn't updated its index. As to why the reported number of indexed pages is reducing, I imagine it is merely a temporary move. The number of results in Google's searches varies just about constantly.
*Actually, formally speaking, it has been suggested that Google is not capable of indexing all 11.5 billion pages currently believed to be online (and the 10 million more that are added every day), and that as it indexes new pages, old pages are forced from the index. (This is a really rough description of the theory - if it's happening at all, it's likely to be a lot more difficult than this.) If this is happening, it might explain why the number of indexed pages is reducing. A good way to deal with it's to maintain top quality content, to keep producing backlinks, to keep raising it, and to generate a Google sitemap, even though I think it's a long-shot.
