I recently received another 'please help' mail from the man called Ian who runs an adventure organization in Tanzania (http://www.betheladventure.co.uk ). Ian was worried about the effect of the number of issues including indexing and link dampening, and was eager for help. Regrettably, he had read some fairly misleading articles previously, so he had a somewhat confusing knowledge of the factors at play. Because I suspect he is not alone in his concern and distress, I decided to submit the facts of our discussion.

Ian's mail consisted of several issues. I have shown each individually below, followed by my response.

Q: When I look for how many backlinks to my site using 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', I see only 2-3 results. It appears that only 23 of our backlinks have survived Google's dampening link filter. Will there be an occasion delay before they are paid to a site? '

A: Firstly, I believe you could have the dampening link filter just a little puzzled. According to the dampening link filter theory, your links are found and identified by Google, you just don't get the full advantage from them until certain period of time has elapsed. The dampening url filter (if it exists) doesn't end links from appearing in Google's benefits when you search for them. (The only reason your backlinks might not appear in a Google search is if Google has not yet found the pages containing the links.) Also, don't worry too much about things such as the dampening link filter. For a start, it is not even close to established / accepted fact. Several well regarded SEO experts don't believe in it in any way. Furthermore, even though it does exist, it only affects those firms with all the budget to generate the huge numbers (hundreds or thousands possibly) of links reputedly needed to trigger it. If your quantity of backlinks suddenly increases by 20, that's not a problem.

And secondly, don't feel every thing Google tells you. By trying to find 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', you usually only view a small proportion of real links to your site. A: The number of indexed pages is simply the number of pages on your site that Google 'knows about.'
